County League: Waterville 0-06.....Ardfert 1-08 (Jan '07)

Due to fixture congestion some outstanding games in the County League were still unplayed at the end of '06. Waterville still had the chance of gaining promotion to division one but would have to overcome the men from Ardfert who are in the Intermediate All Ireland Semi-Final and are many peoples favourites to win out that competition.
Waterville on the other hand had the disappointment of losing the South Kerry Championship after two outstanding finals plus extra time and it was always going to be difficult to lift morale and enthusiasm for this game.
The day was good and conditions were excellent for the time of year which helped to attract a large crowd of spectators. The local boys were quick to show that in spite of predictions they were not about to surrender this game without a struggle. Their first half display should have seen them in front but for a fortuituous goal by Ardfert and the sides were level at the break.
The second half proved more difficult with Ardfert's physical advantage and fitness making the difference. Waterville blooded some younger members of the squad during this game and the experience should stand to them in the coming season. The dream of Division One status has evaporated but the future looks promising and with a little luck, which eluded the team in large measure last year, we can look forward to another season of entertaining football.

South Kerry Senior Championship Final (Replay) .....Played @ Cahersiveen Dec 26th 2006

The line between victory and defeat can be so fine but none more so than at Con Keating Park on Stephen’s Day 2006. Waterville unfortunately came out on the wrong side of the result and will have to wait another year to strive to capture Jack Murphy.
The first game on Saturday the 23 rd of December was a cliffhanger and ended all square. The general consensus was that we had witnessed the best final for many years and that neither team deserved to lose. True indeed but would the replay live up to it? The answer is well and truly yes. The football, courage, honesty and skill levels were supreme and at the end of normal time, the teams were again tied.
Extra time finally separated the teams with Rangers snatching victory by the minimum. Again, as in the previous match Gaelic football was the winner and the large crowd in attendance will talk about this two game plus extra time final for months, nay years to come. The sportsmanship from both sets of players was exemplary and augurs well for the future of our beautiful game.
Patrick Curran had the first point from a free after a foul on Gearoid O’ Sullivan, but in the third minute midfielder Paul McGill found himself in acres of space and maximised this good fortune with a top class strike for a goal. This was the start that Rangers needed and proved to be crucial to the eventual outcome. Waterville held their nerve and after an exchange of points, the game settled to an even, enthralling, competitive encounter. But then in the eleventh minute it was McGill again who slipped by the Waterville defence and bore down on the goal but referee Lyons decided that Waterville keeper, Bernard Murphy, committed a foul and awarded a penalty, which the busy Brian Hickey slotted to the net with confidence. The hill that had been Kenneigh had suddenly become Cnoc na dTobar. Some positional switches and re-alignment were made by Waterville management and by the break the deficit was just a point with Rangers having 2-01 to Waterville’s 0-06. Waterville were now playing with renewed determination but would have to face the incline and a stiff breeze in the second half.
The second period began with Rangers kicking another point within the first minute. But disaster struck again when Waterville were reduced to fourteen players for the remaining ten minutes of the game after Denis Donnelly was shown red by referee Lyons. Waterville again upped their efforts and points from Patrick Curran and Denis O’Dwyer saw the teams on level scores with six minutes left in the game. Waterville were in full flight but it was the classy Brian Hickey who nudged Rangers in front again through a free. Patrick Curran levelled the scores again with just four minutes left in the game and when Keith Moran kicked the ball over the bar two minutes later Waterville thought the title was theirs but referee Lyons brought back play and judged that Patrick Curran had committed an infringement.
The game went to extra time with both sets of players out on their feet. In this period Rangers scored two points to Waterville’s one and took the title westward for the first time in many years. All Waterville players and substitutes did their best. Not withstanding the early two goals the defence limited Rangers to just one point from play. Midfield and attack tried valiantly but ended up just short that extra score to force a second replay.
Nobody will begrudge Rangers their victory. They performed with skill and in the most sporting manner. Waterville players, mentors and supporters were without doubt disappointed, but wish to extend their sincere congratulations to Rangers and their supporters. As already stated this was sportsmanship at the highest level. The game was contested on the field of play and when the final whistle sounded it was congratulations, commiserations and handshakes all round.
Man of the match Brian Hickey was a worthy choice and Waterville players and supporters appreciate his thoughtful and generous words in his acceptance speech.

South Kerry Senior Championship Semi-Final: ...... (Played @ Cahersiveen Dec 9th 2006)

Waterville 1-08 ..... Renard 0-07
Waterville seniors have reached the final of this years South Kerry Championship after a testing encounter against Renard at Cahersiveen on Saturday ninth of December. Waterville won the toss and elected to play into the lower goal.
This was a fine sporting game where every player on both teams gave of their best. The first half was less than exciting with Waterville making a number of errors and allowing Renard the opportunity of taking the lead which they duly did through the reliable boot of free-taker Stephen O'Sullivan.
Indeed, it was Renard who looked the more alert in the opening stages and set up the more promising attacks whle Waterville were finding it difficult to develop a pattern to their play.
By the fifteenth minute Renard had converted three frees with Waterville showing little threat up front. Keith Moran was just wide of the Renard goal in the tenth minute for what might have been a goal, though against the run of play.
Eventually, in the twentieth minute Denis O'Dwyer opened Waterville's account with a point from close range after shipping a a few tough but fair tackles. This had an immediate effect on Waterville's performance and from the kick out Waterville got possession. John D O'Shea found Patrick Curran who deftly touched the ball into the path of Alan O'Shea who made no mistake from close range.
Renard had another point before the break through a Stephen O'Sullivan free and the sides retired level at the break on the score line of 1-01 to 0-04.
Two minutes into the second half after some great work involving Kevin O'Dwyer, Keith Moran and Denis O'Carroll, the latter kicked a wonderful point from near the stand. Two minutes later it was Patrick Curran who lofted a huge kick with his right foot from the left corner after good interplay involving Paul Galvin, Gary Galvin and the afore mentioned Curran. But then Renard were awarded a free in the seventh which O'Sullivan again converted and the same player had one from play soon afterwards to level affairs again.
Alan O'Shea nudged Waterville in front again with a fine point from near the town sideline but again it was Stephen O'Sullivan who kept his side in touch with another pointed free in the twelfth minute to score his seventh point of the game. This was to be Renard's final score while Waterville controlled the reainder of the game and had three more points to run out deserving winners with four points to spare.
Full backs Mike O'Shea and Seamus O'Shea were outstanding in defence while up front the points by Alan O'Shea and Patrick Curran were ones to relish.
Team: Bernard Murphy, Kevin O’Dwyer, Seamus O’Shea, Mike O'Shea, Vincie O’Sullivan, Haulie Courtney, Gary Galvin, Seamus O’Sullivan, Paul Galvin, Keith Moran(0-01), Denis O’Carroll(0-01), Denis O'Dwyer(0-01), Alan O’Shea(1-01), Patrick Curran (0-03, 1 free), John D OShea.
Subs Used: Gearóid O'Sullivan, Michael Curran, Buddy O'Shea(0-01).

South Kerry Minor Final 2006 ........(Played @ Con Keating Park, Nov 26th 2006)

WATERVILLE 3-07..........SKELLIG RANGERS 1-12

The great Frank Casey must have nodded with quiet approval as he watched his minors annexe another South Kerry Minor title to that won in 2005. This was a game of football to rank up with the best, and the players on both teams didn't let the inclement weather conditions interfere with their skill levels and their commitment to pure football. Indeed it was a shame that we had to have a loser but sport can cause high elation and deep depression with only seconds separating both, such was the case in Con Keating Park on Sunday 26 th of November 2006.
Waterville had wind assistance in the first half and needed to build up a good score to face the elements in the second half. Inside the first minute Stephen O’Dwyer had the first point after he fielded a good ball, passed to Donncha Fenton, took the return and kicked over from 30 metres. In the next two minutes Donncha Fenton added another two points and it looked like Waterville were settling comfortably. Rangers tightened up their defence and with Gary O’Driscoll playing a major role around midfield they took the game to Waterville. It was O’Driscoll who had their first point after eight minutes but at the other end it was Fenton again who took a pass from Patrick Curran in the left corner and increased Waterville's tally.
In the space of two minutes Rangers turned the tables with a point from the alert Daniel O’Sullivan and immediately some careless defending allowed the lively Eoin O’Connor in for a goal, giving Waterville keeper Sheera O’Connell no chance. This was a huge boost for the Portmagee boys but Waterville replied straight away with points from Denis Donnelly and Stephen O’Dwyer. Rangers finished the stronger and in spite of the strong wind added three more points before the break. Waterville did have the ball in the net before half time after some wonderful interplay involving Daniel O’Dwyer, Donncha Fenton, Patrick Curran and Denis Donnelly but referee Curran correctly adjudged that the ball was punched directly to the net. At the break Rangers led by two points on the scoreline of 0-06 to 1-05. Daniel O’Dwyer and Niall Fitzgerald were particularly impressive in Waterville's defence but it looked like Waterville’s seven wides were going to prove costly as they faced the elements in the second half.
Waterville midfield won the throw in and within thirty seconds Donncha Fenton was unlucky to see his shot for a point come back off the upright. Dean Murphy was unfortunate two minutes later to see his shot for a point go wide of the right upright after taking a good pass from Adrian Walsh.
Waterville were not to let this title escape without giving their all. Donnelly and Cormac O’Sullivan at midfield worked tirelessly between defence and attack and in the sixth minute Waterville were thrown a lifeline when Patrick Curran clinically slotted home a penalty after a foul on himself. Against the odds Waterville were again in front and suddenly it looked like they might have a chance of retaining their title. Thirteen minutes into the half Patrick Curran took a quick pass and slotted over to send his team into a two-point lead.
Rangers levelled matters again with just ten minutes left in the game and should have goaled in the twenty second minute but the alertness of keeper O’Connell saved the day for Waterville. Bernard Casey sent Rangers into the lead in the twenty third minute after a careless clearance out of defence and with just two minutes left it looked like the minor title was headed west but the Waterville management sprung a surprise packet in the form of Barry O’Dwyer.
He had a barely arrived on the pitch when he collected a long pass from Fenton, picked his spot and rifled to the net. Again it was all to play for but Rangers stuck to their task and again took a two-point lead. Waterville hearts again went from sky high to deep low.
Waterville had the ball in the net a minute into injury time but again the score was not given as a player was deemed to be inside the small parallelogram. This proved to be a controversial decision and video evidence later suggested that Waterville may have been harshly treated in that instance. All was lost or so we thought but Paddy Currran was fouled going through about twenty metres out. Rangers lined the goal but by some combination of Curran's skill and good fortune the ball ended up in the net.
Waterville were a point up again and shortly afterwards the final whistle sounded and the title was once again Waterville bound. Sean Cathal O’Sullivan played a huge role in defence along with good support from Alan O’Dwyer and Greg Gibson. Donnelly and O’Sullivan were stalwarts at midfield particularly in the second half.
In the forwards Adrian Walsh, Ger Grady and Stephen O’Dwyer contributed hugely and the introduction of Dean Murphy and Barry O Dwyer were masterstrokes by the management. Patrick Curran was his usual reliable self and caused massive problems for the Ranger's defence with Donncha Fenton being selected as Corcoran's man of the match.
Full credit to the mentors John O’Dwyer, Haulie O’Dwyer and John "Super" O’Sullivan. They certainly proved once again that they have something special when it comes to finals.
Team: Sheera O’Connell, Greg Gibson, Daniel O’Dwyer, Seán C O’Sullivan, Alan O’Dwyer, Niall Fitzgerald, Cormac O’Sullivan, Denis Donnelly(0-01), Adrian Walsh, Patrick Curran(2-01), Ger Grady, Stephen O’Dwyer(0-02), Donncha Fenton (0-03)
Subs: Shane Curran, Dean Murphy, Conor Daly, Barry O’Dwyer(1-00), Oran Clifford
Footnote: A special word of thanks to Eileen "Super" O'Sullivan for videoing the game. She did a fine job and vindicated every minute of referee Currans extra time.

South Kerry Senior Championship 2006: Waterville 0-09....Valentia 0-08 (Played @ Valentia Nov. 18th 2006)

Waterville 0-09 Valentia 0-08

In a hard fought South Kerry Championship game at O’Connor Park, Valentia Waterville took on the reigning South Kerry champions. This was never going to be an easy task since Valentia have been the specialists in this competition over the years.
Some observers had suggested an easy victory for Waterville if current county league form was to be taken into account but the more shrewd knew that Valentia would not surrender easily. This most certainly turned out to be the case and the result was in doubt right up to the final whistle.
Valentia started the livelier but the first scoring opportunity fell to Waterville’s Patrick Curran when he was awarded a free after a foul on himself. What would normally have been a simple tap over fell short into keeper Pat O’Sullivan’s hands. At the other end Paul O’Connor had an excellent chance of a point in the second minute but was forced to kick wide by the lively corner back Kevin O’Dwyer.
The first score came from the boot of Valentia’s marksman supreme John Shanahan in the sixth minute and two minutes later he doubled his tally. This was not in the Waterville script and Valentia continued to control matters in the midfield and half-forward areas of the field.
Waterville finally registered in the tenth minute when corner back Mike O’Shea latched on to a pass and made a surging run through the centre and was fouled. Denis O’Dwyer took on the free kick and raised the white flag to the relief of Waterville players, mentors and supporters. This was followed almost immediately by a terrific score from Patrick Curran and more than made up for the earlier miss. It was Curran again two minutes later who converted a free after a foul on Denis O’Dwyer.
Valentia continued their dominance around the centre, invariably picked up every breaking ball and putting enormous pressure on the Waterville defence. Seventeen minutes into the game wing forward John O’Connor rifled over a wonderful point for the Islanders but a pinpoint pass from the increasingly influential Denis O’Dwyer to corner forward John D O’Shea saw him edge Waterville in front again.
The final two points of the half were special. John Shanahan kicked over a “45” which was particularly difficult and drew the admiration of all. Denis O’Dwyer kicked a free from hear the right sideline, thirty five metres out, with the outside of his boot and extracted a similar response from the crowd.
Waterville were fortunate enough to be two points in front at the break. We witnessed very little clean catching at midfield with Valentia picking up all the loose ball around the centre.
The second half promised to be a tight encounter and it certainly proved to be all of that.
It was sharpshooter Shanahan who raised the first white flag of the second half after just two minutes though a free and again the margin was down to the minimum. Then with four minutes elapsed Valentia’s lively corner forward Daniel Falvey snatched the ball after a defensive handling error. He jinked, turned, sold a dummy or two, and unleashed what seemed a goal-bound shot but the alertness of keeper Murphy in the Waterville goal saved the day. This was a huge let-off for the Lakesiders and was a warning as to Valentia’s potential up front.
Denis O’Dwyer added another point a minute later and we had no more scores until the final minutes of the game when Valentia’s Paul Curran again reduced the margin to a single point with just five minutes left. In the last minute of the game Patrick Curran for Waterville and Muiris O’Sullivan for Valentia exchanged points but Waterville survived by the minimum.
The paying punters certainly got value for their money and maybe Waterville just about deserved victory. Valentia will consider themselves unlucky not to have eked out a draw.
Waterville’s backs played well as a unit but there is ample room for improvement in other areas. Denis O’Dwyer was outstanding once again and showed he has lost none of his zest and enthusiasm for the game.
Team: Bernard Murphy, Kevin O’Dwyer, Seamus O’Shea, Mike O'Shea, Vincie O’Sullivan, Haulie Courtney, Gary Galvin, Seamus O’Sullivan, Paul Galvin, Keith Moran, Denis O’Carroll, Denis O'Dwyer(0-03, 2 frees), Alan O’Shea(0-01), Patrick Curran (0-04, 1 free), John D OShea (0-01)
Subs Used: Gearóid O'Sullivan, Michael Curran, Buddy O'Shea.

South Kerry Minor Championship 2006: Waterville 2-15 .......Valentia 1-07 (Played @ Foilmore Nov 4th 2006)

Waterville 2-15 Valentia 1-07

Though the score might suggest that this was an easy victory for Waterville it was hard earned and only in the final quarter did it become relatively comfortable.
Waterville were first to register a score through a Patrick Curran free kick after just two minutes of play and a minute later midfielder Denis Donnelly sent a pinpoint pass to Curran again who doubled his tally to two points. Waterville had made the better start but Valentia’s Alan Curran won a good ball from the kick out, found Callum Smith who pointed with ease.
In the fifth minute Waterville missed a golden chance of goaling after some wonderful forward interplay but the final shot screamed just wide of the left post. Valentia’s Paul O’Sullivan levelled affairs in the eight minute but straight away Patrick Curran had Waterville in front again after another excellent ball from Denis Donnelly.
The game ebbed and flowed but in the seventeenth minute came the crucial score when inside forward Stephen O’Dwyer delivered a good pass to the busy Patrick Curran who rattled the Valentia net. This was a huge boost to the boys in red and they lifted their game considerably. In spite of wasting a number of good scoring opportunities they added another five points before the break to Valentia’s two. The half time score stood at Waterville 1-09…….Valentia 0-04.
Valentia’s Brian O’Connor opened the second half, scoring a point from a free but Denis Donnelly had one from play immediately afterwards after great defensive work by the tireless Alan O’Dwyer.
Valentia were thrown a lifeline in the eight minute when Muiris O’Sullivan finished to the Waterville net after some sloppy defending. This was as good as it got however for the islanders and Waterville picked off scores with regularity from then to the final whistle.
Waterville meet Portmagee in the final but will have to improve considerably in some sectors if they are to retain their title.

Waterville: Sheera O’Connell, Shane Curran, Daniel O’Dwyer, Sean C O’Sullivan, Alan O’Dwyer, Niall Fitzgerald, Cormac O’Sulivan, Denis Donnelly (0-01), Adrian Walsh, Patrick Curran (1-10, 6 frees), Gerard Grady, Donncha Fenton (1-02), Stephen O’Dwyer (0-02)

County League Div 2: Waterville V Currow.....Played at Waterville October 29th 2006

Waterville 2-12 …….Currow 0-09

In the third last game of this year’s county league campaign Currow travelled south to Waterville on Sunday 29 th of October. As it was for the minor game the day before, underfoot conditions were soft but this didn’t prevent us having a fine game of competitive football.
Waterville’s Seamus O’Sullivan won the throw in and booted the ball along the ground to Denis O’Dwyer who was fouled. John D O’Shea converted the free and Waterville were a point ahead with just forty seconds gone in the game. Almost immediately midfielder Paul Galvin took a pass from wing back Vincie O’Sullivan and the left footer kicked a sweet point from all of fifty metres.
John Buckley had Currow’s first point from a free in the third minute and Dan O’Shea levelled affairs after a poor clearance out of the Waterville defence. Patrick Curran edged Waterville ahead again after a foul on himself but again John Buckley for Currow levelled after ten minutes.
We then saw a wonderful point from corner forward Alan O’Shea. He received the ball in the left corner, near the flag, turned and lofted the ball between the posts.
With less than ten minutes left in the half Pa Dennehy edged Currow in front through a fine individual effort but then a long ball out of defence by the industrious Haulie Courtney was somehow nursed to the net by Alan O’Shea in a struggle with the Currow keeper Eoghan Collins. This was a major boost for the home team and saw them lead by two points at the interval on the scoreline of 1-05 to 0-06.
Paul Galvin was a colossus at midfield for Waterville with Seamus O’Shea and Haulie Courtney forming a solid backbone in the defence. John Buckley and Dan O’Shea worked tirelessly for Currow.
Waterville had much the better of the second half and by the third minute they had doubled their lead to four points. Currrow managed just three points in this half while Waterville notched up 1-07. It was an easy victory in the end for the home side though it should be noted that Currow were somewhat under strength.
Overall it was a good team display by Waterville and was badly needed after so many weeks without a competitive match. The team is still in contention for promotion to division one and the meeting with Ardfert promses to be one not to be missed.
Team: Bernard Murphy, Kevin O’Dwyer, Seamus O’Shea, Mike O'Shea, Vincie O’Sullivan, Haulie Courtney, Gary Galvin, Seamus O’Sullivan, Paul Galvin (0-01), Keith Moran, Denis O’Carroll, Denis O'Dwyer (1-00), Alan O’Shea (1-02), Patrick Curran (0-07, 5 frees), John D OShea (0-02, 1 free)
Sub Used: Gearóid O'Sullivan, Fergal Cronin, Michael Curran

South Kerry Minor Championship 2006: Waterville 3-08.....St Michaels / Foilmore 1-10

Waterville 3-08 .............St Michaels / Foilmore 1-10

In soft underfoot conditions Waterville minors defended their title against a well balanced St Michaels / Foilmore team.
Waterville went ahead after just seventeen seconds through a Donncha Fenton point after good work by Cormac O’Sullivan and Denis Donnelly. Two minutes later Waterville had the ball in the oppositions net when Patrick Curran took a quick free to Fenton who offloaded to Stephen O’Dwyer who found the target with ease. It was Curran again who had the next score with a fine individual effort when he took on his marker and rifled over a point.
It looked like it was going to be an easy victory for the Lakesiders but after Cian O’Connor kicked over their first score from a free in the seventh minute and the boys in green and red lifted their game and gradually crawled back into contention. St Michaels / Foilmore got on top around the middle of the field and whittled away at Waterville’s lead. The home side’s attack was guilty of wasting numerous scoring opportunities and was lucky to be ahead at the break by 1-05 to 0-06.
The second half began with both sides exchanging early points. Gradually St Michaels / Foilmore began to play the better football and by the start of the third quarter they were only one point in arrears. Then in the space of just two minutes the St Michaels / Foilmore keeper had to pick the ball out of the net twice. This was a cruel blow to the visitors as they suddenly found themselves seven points in arrears.
Waterville played with renewed vigour and though St Michaels / Foilmore fired home a late goal through Emmet Curran Waterville held out for a four point victory in the end.
We wish a speedy recovery to young Damien Kelly who was injured in the twentieth minute of the second half. It was some time before medical assistance arrived and then it became apparent that there was no ambulance available. It may be time to review the emergency medical services in our area.

Waterville: Sheera O’Connell, Shane Curran, Daniel O’Dwyer, Sean C O’Sullivan, Alan O’Dwyer, Niall Fitzgerald, Cormac O’Sulivan, Denis Donnelly, Adrian Walsh, Patrick Curran (0-06, 4 frees), Gerard Grady, Donncha Fenton (1-01), Stephen O’Dwyer (2-01).

St Michaels / Foilmore: Eanna O’Connor, John Kelly, Max Thiemann, Paul Clifford, Colm O’Connell, Cian O’Connor ( 0-05, 5 frees), Mark Griffin, Joe O’Sullivan, Dan O’Connell, John O’Connell, Keith McCarthy (0-02), Damien Kelly (0-02), Brian Smith (0-01), Sub: Emmet Curran (1-00).

Intermediate Championship Quarter Final: Waterville V Ardfert at Waterville (Sunday Oct 1st 2006)

Waterville 0-13 Ardfert 3-11

In the much anticipated replay in the quarter final of the Intermediate Championship Ardfert made the long journey to Waterville on a bright, sunny October afternoon.
The first game in Ardfert was a classic and ended in stalemate even after extra time with both sides relishing the chance of another day.
Adfert were first to set the standard with two points within the first five minutes but in the ninth minute Keith Moran had his jersey pulled and Patrick Curran opened Waterville’s account.
Ardfert piled on the pressure and added another point after eleven minutes. Waterville backs held out well in spite of a few shaky moments and by the fifteenth minute the sides were level through an Alan O’Shea point. Some poor marking allowed Ardfert to take the lead again but a marvellous Keith Moran point after good work by Denis O’Carroll and Gearóid O’Sullivan pushed Waterville in front again. By now Waterville lost full back Seamus O‘Shea through injury and some rejigging had to be done with midfielder Paul Galvin taking over at full back and Seamus O’Sullivan replacing O’Shea and moving to midfield. By the break things were looking promising for the home side and they led on the scoreline of 0-07 to 0-05.
The second half proved to be a difficult experience for the home team. Ardfert were first to score with a point in the first minute but a Patrick Curran free restored Waterville’s cushion of two points. Then in the space of five minutes Adrfert netted twice and had a point for good measure. The tables were well and truly turned and from then on Waterville were chasing the game, Ardfert having taken a five point lead.
Both sides swapped points but Ardfert were proving the more resilient and held on to their lead while Waterville tried hard but failed to close the gap. To add to Waterville’s woes Ardfert had the ball in the net for the third time two minutes before the end of normal time and Waterville bowed out of this year’s championship.
Team:Bernard Murphy, Kevin O'Dwyer, Seamus O'Shea, Mike O'Shea, Vincie O'Sullivan, Gary Galvin, Haulie Courtney, Gearoid O'Sullivan, Paul Galvin, Keith Moran(0-02), Denis O'Carroll(0-01), John D O'Shea(0-01), Patrick Curran(0-06, 4frees), Denis O'Dwyer (0-01 free45), Alan O'Shea (0-01)

Kerry Minors Lose All Ireland Final Replay (Saturday Sept 23rd 2006)

Kerry 0-09 Roscommon 1-10

After a valiant display in the All Ieland Minor Final Replay at Cusack Park Ennis, Kerry were overcome by Roscommon and suffered the agony of another All Ireland minor defeat. It was especially disappointing for our club as Patrick Curran captained the team and Brendy Donnelly was a selector.
The day had been wet earlier in the day and underfoot conditions were difficult for both sides. Roscommon adapted the better and might have had a goal in the the first half but for the agility of the Kerry keeper. Scores were difficult to come by and the result was in doubt up to the last minutes of the game.
Early in the second half a Roscommon free was driven towards the Kerry goal area and seemed to be safe but the ball slipped free and was finished to the net. This was a cruel blow and lifted the spirit of the boys from Connacht. In spite of this Kerry fought back and took a one point lead again.
Roscommon, however finished the stronger and in spite of wasting good scoring chances managed to claim the Markam trophy with a four point winning cushion.
Well done to Brendy, Patrick and the rest of the managent and squad anyway. You gave us all great enjoyment and with a little better luck the trophy might have been in Waterville.
One wonders why this game was fixed for Ennis and why not the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick. Surely a game of this importance warranted the use of the superior facilities that Limerick has to offer.

County League Div 2: Round 8 Dingle V Waterville (At Dingle Sat. Sept 2 06)

Waterville 0-09 Dingle 1-09

In a division two top of the table clash Waterville lost out to Dingle by an extremely late goal.
This game will however be remembered not for the many excellent scores from both sides nor the standard of football played but for incidents that occurred in the second half. Indeed, the game might well have been abandoned close to the end when a nasty melee broke out. Shortly afterwards a Waterville player suffered a foul blow to the head in an off the ball incident and incurred serious facial injury. He was detained in Cork University Hospital until five am Sunday morning and will need further treatment. Players who train all year and provide their supporters with hours of entertainment deserve better than this.
The game itself was sporting up to the melee and fine scores were kicked by both sides.
Waterville led by 0-06 to 0-03 at half time with Denis O’Dwyer kicking three excellent points from play.
Waterville defended well in the second period and maintained their lead until Dingle drew level with two minutes left in normal time. However, the referee saw fit to play in excess of eight minutes extra time and Waterville finally lost out through a late late goal.
Waterville played their hearts out and in different circumstances might have achieved a different result.
Team:Ciarán Dennehy, Kevin O’Dwyer, Seamus O’Shea, Michael Curran, Vincie O’Sullivan, Haulie Courtney, Gary Galvin, Seamus O’Sullivan, Gearoid O’Sullivan, Keith Moran, Denis O’Carroll, John D O’Shea, Alan O’Shea, Denis O'Dwyer, Donncha Fenton

Scorers: Denis O’Dwyer 0-03, Haulie Courtney 0-02 frees, Denis O’Carroll 0-02, Keith Moran 0-01, Alan O’Shea 0-01.

Intermediate Championship Quarter Fnal: Ardfert V Waterville (At Ardfert Sun 27th Aug 2006)

Waterville 1-12 Ardfert 2-09

For those who made the long trip to Ardfert on Sunday August 27th to support Waterville in the Intermediate Championship quarter final it was a heart stopping experience. After an exhilarating hour of football followed by twenty minutes of extra time the teams must meet again to decide who progresses to the semi-final stage.
Denis O’Dwyer got the scoring started with a fine point after just three minutes and two minutes later the crossbar and then the post denied Waterville what seemed a sure goal but the rebound was popped over by the vigilant Patrick Curran
By the ninth minute Waterville went into a four point lead with Ardfert yet to register. They finally got off the mark through a quick free to the unmarked Stephen Wallace and two minutes later corner forward Frank Wallace doubled their account.
Waterville keeper Ciarán Dennehy saved what seemed a certain Ardfert goal a minute later and by now Ardfert were coming more into the game and had another goal chance in the nineteenth minute.
Keith Moran steadied the Waterville ship with a fine point via his left foot with four minutes left in the half and by the break Waterville deservedly led on the score line of 0-07 to 0-03.
Waterville started brightly in the second half with Michael Curran and Seamus O'Shea particularly prominent in defence but it was Ardfert’s Martin Ferris who opened the scoring after five minutes.
It was Waterville’s keeper Dennehy who saved the day for his side in the eight minute when again Ardfert should have goaled. Midway through the half Waterville still had a three point advantage but then Ardfert intercepted a Waterville pass, drove down the right sideline and the ball ended up in the net. The sides were level with fifteen minutes left in the game.
Waterville rose to the new challenge and added two further points to push ahead again. Ardfert remained determined and clawed back the two points to earn a draw.
The drama was far from over yet as the teams regrouped for extra time.
At the throw in Seamus O’Sullivan tapped the ball down to brother Gearóid. He found Denis O’Dwyer who in turn found Denis O’Carroll in the left corner. O’Carroll took a pot shot from an acute angle and Waterville were ahead again with just twenty seconds gone.
Again Waterville were the more threatening and after good work by Waterville’s midfield, Kerry minor Patrick Curran rattled the Ardfert net. This was a dream start to the extra time but then Ardfert were awarded a penalty which was converted and again the game was in the melting pot.
In the second period of extra time Ardfert levelled after just thirty seconds but again Waterville nudged in front through a Denis O’Dwyer free. Again Ardfert pulled level and when the final whistle sounded it was relief all round and both sides will have to meet again.

County League Div 2: Round 7, Spa V Waterville (At Killarney Aug 12th )

Spa 0-11 Waterville 1-16

In a wonderfully contested game of football played at Killarney on Saturday 12 th August, Waterville emerged victorious over Spa in round seven of the County League.
Waterville’s Alan O’Shea was first on the score sheet within the first minute with a fisted point but some defensive indiscipline by Waterville allowed Spa level through a free three minutes later via the boot of lively corner forward Niall O’Mahony and the same player added another point two minutes later.
Already Spa were showing their considerable attacking skills and the Waterville full back line were under severe pressure. Then in the seventh minute Waterville’s Gearóid O’Sullivan won the ball around midfield, passed to Donncha Fenton who surged through the middle of the Spa defence but was fouled thirty metres out from goal. John D O’Shea took the free and levelled affairs.
Spa however, were in command and added two more points from frees and it looked like Waterville defence were in for a torrid evening.
The O’Sullivan at midfield stuck to their task and after good hard grafting by Gary Galvin at wing back Seamus O’Sullivan found Denis O’Dwyer who kicked a wonderful point from a difficult angle on the right side.
Spa’s Paul Russell had a point in the eighteenth minute but almost immediately Alan O’Shea was awarded a free to the right side of the Spa goal, ten metres in from the sideline. Haulie Courtney was called up from his centre back berth and with a sweet strike of his left foot the ball sailed between the posts. In spite of Spa putting on most of the attacking pressure Waterville were getting to grips with the pace of the game.
With less than ten minutes left in the half Spa’s Niall O’Mahony found himself with only the keeper to beat but Bernard Murphy stopped a pile driver and saved the day for his side. By half time Spa led by 0-09 to 0-06.
After the break Waterville were a transformed outfit and within four minutes had drawn level. The O’Sullivan brothers were on top at midfield and Waterville players mopped up most breaking ball. Indeed, less than two minutes in Denis O’Dwyer missed a clear goal chance but made amends in the eleventh minute when he rattled the net after a pinpoint pass from wing forward Donncha Fenton. O’Dwyer went on to give a “Man of the Match “ display with a personal tally of 1-05. Alan O’Shea in the corner forward position wasn’t far behind and caused huge problems for the Spa full back line.
It was all Waterville in the latter stages of the game and the level of defensive play, especially the sure handling of Buddy O’Shea combination football and determination was a joy to the eyes of their appreciative supporters.
Spa for their part played good honest football and had their goal opportunity been converted a different result might have occurred

County Junior League: Div 4 Final Waterville V Renard (At Cahersiveen July 28th 2006)
Waterville 0-12 Renard 0-10

Having overcome Valentia in the semi-final on Tues evening after extra time in a marvellous game of football, Waterville were faced with their scond outing in the space of four days.
In a keenly contested county final Waterville just shaded it against Renard in what turned out to be a fine sporting contest at Cahersiveen on Friday evening 28th of July.
Waterville had the initial scoring opportunities but it was Stephen O’Sullivan who opened Renard’s account through a free in the fourth minute and two minutes later the stylish Aidan O’Sullivan extended their lead with a terrific score from close to the stand sideline about forty five metres out. Renard were at this stage much the more eager and the Waterville defence were under severe pressure. This was further compounded when Joe McCrohan added another point for his side with Waterville yet to score.
In the ninth minute Paul Galvin for Waterville delivered a long ball from midfield to veteran full forward Dan Fitz. He in turn delivered to Danny Walsh in the left corner. Walsh slipped his marker and coolly kicked over from a tight angle. Waterville lifted their game at this point but it was Renard’s Maurice O’Neill who kicked the next point to restore their three point lead.
By the twentieth minute John D O’Shea had two more points for Waterville to reduce the deficit to a single point but by the break Renard lead on the scoreline 0-06 to 0-04.
Within three minutes of the restart the sides were level through John D O’Shea and Darren Riordan and in the seventh minute John D sent his side into the lead for the first time after a foul on brother Buddy. During this period Renard wasted numerous scoring chances, which were to prove costly in the end.
Stephen O’Sullivan drew the sides level again through a free but immediately a searing run down the right side by wing back Kevin O’Dwyer saw that player pop the bal over the bar for a tremendous individual score. Waterville were on top at this stage and John D added two further points to send Waterville into a three point lead with less than eight minutes left in the game.
Mike O’Shea at full back was outstanding all through showing alertness and composure ably assisted by Daniel O’Dwyer in the corner while there was an intriguing tussle at midfield between Paul Galvin and Renard’s Paul Sugrue.
With normal time up Waterville were two points in front but then in added time Stephen O’Sullivan converted a free to reduce the margin to the minimum and in the fourth minute of extra time super sub John B O’Shea ensured victory for the Reds with a clinical point after a well struck free in from Niall Moran.
Popular Waterville captain Paul Galvin received the league trophy from Patrick Brennan representing the County Board.

County Junior League: Div 4 Quarter Final Waterville V Keel (At Waterville July 2nd 2006)

Waterville B 2-13 Keel 2-06

Waterville are through to the semi-final of the Urban League after a comfortable win against Keel at Waterville on Sunday July 2nd. Keel were first off the mark with a goal in the first minute and followed up with a point immediately. Waterville remained composed and whittled away at the Keel lead and were level after fourteen minutes and led by two points by the nineteenth. But then James Lng for Keel had his second goal and Keel were in front again. But then Fergal Cronin had his second goal of the weekend and by half time Waterville were ahead by three points.

The second half belonged to Waterville though Keel did fight back briefly midway through the half to notch up four points in quick succession. Score of the game came from the boot of Danny Walsh when he volleyed a ball which was miskicked by Eoin Curran and shook the Keel net.
This was an extremely entertaining game and produced some great passages of skilful play.

County League Div 2: Round 6, Sneem V Waterville (At Sneem July 1st 2006)

Sneem 0-09 Waterville 1-10

In a sun drenched Sneem on Saturday 1 st of July Waterville seniors added another two points to their County League total by defeating the locals in a tense entertaining game of football.
Sneem immediately swept into an early lead through a free and two minutes into the game Waterville keeper Bernard Murphy pulled off a magnificent save to deny Sneem what seemed like a sure goal. Alan O’Shea had Waterville’s first point in the fourth minute with a well-taken score from the right side and the teams were level.
Waterville had plenty scoring opportunities in the early period but failed to capitalise. A lot of breaking ball around the midfield area was invariably mopped up by Sneem players. The Waterville defence toiled manfully and by the break Sneem were just in front on the scoreline of 0-04 to 0-05.
John Damien O’Sullivan edged Sneem further ahead five minutes into the second half but almost immediately good work by Denis O’Carroll and Fergal Cronin ended with a fine point from Keith Moran. By now O’Carroll and Denis O’Dwyer had swapped positions and the payout was immediate. O’Dwyer won a ball close to the right corner flag, took on the Sneem backs and won himself a free. Centre back Haulie Courtney was called upon to take the kick, which he did with success. It was O’Dwyer himself who levelled the scores in the fifteenth minute with a wonderfully struck score. In fact O’Dwyer helped himself to five points from play during the course of the game.
Waterville’s midfield were now getting to grips with their opponents and Gearóid O’Sullivan in particular was in tigerish mood and won numerous 50/50 opportunities setting up many Waterville attacks. The crucial score came in the twenty second minute when the nippy Fergal Cronin rattled the net after great work by John D O’Shea and Denis O’Dwyer. Waterville were now in front and managed to stay there despite the efforts of a determined Sneem outfit to hold out for a four point victory margin.
The final twenty minutes of this game was refreshing and encouraging from a Waterville point of view and we look forward eagerly to more of the same.

South Kerry Under 14 “A” Final: Waterville V St Marys (At Waterville June 10th, 2006)

Waterville 4-05 St. Marys 0-06

Contrary to many predictions Waterville took the under 14 South Kerry “A” title at Waterville on Saturday 10th of June. After a spell of fine weather conditions deteriorated with wind and rain playing a major part in the day’s proceedings.
In the first half Waterville faced into the elements knowing that their task was not going to be an easy one since in an earlier meeting in the competition Cahersiveen had won comprehensively.
From the throw in by referee Michael Curran Waterville showed they were determined to make amends for the earlier defeat and Barry O’Dwyer opened the scoring after one minute from a tight angle on the left side. Marys put on the pressure but Oran Clifford (Capt) and Cathal Keating toiled relentlessly at midfield and won most of the possession in that area of the pitch.
In spite of having the assistance of the elements and a few scoring opportunities Marys failed to capitalise with Stephen Donnelly cutting off the danger whenever it threatened in the full back line ably assisted by Micheál Curran in the other corner.
A handling mistake in the Cahersiveen defence allowed “Score Poacher Supreme” Barry O’Dwyer in for his first of four goals. This was a crucial score as it further raised the already high confidence in the Waterville outfit. Marys did their best and might have ad an early goal but for the vigilance of Waterville keeper Eoin O’Sullivan. They finally opened their account in the fourteenth minute when Cathal Keating kicked over a point.
Waterville had to demonstrate all their defensive qualities to withstand Mary’s pressure. Wing backs Muireann McAuliffe and Sinéad O’Sullivan were magnificent in the half back line along with Curran and Donnelly in the inside line and limited Cahersiveen to a single point in the first half. Waterville extended their lead when Barry O’Dwyer converted a free after a foul on himself with just three minutes left in the period. At the break Waterville led by 1-02 to 0-01 after playing into the strong wind and lashing rain.

Within a minute of the restart, after more great work from Oran Clifford, Barry O’Dwyer had the ball in the net again and repeated the performance a minute later. There was no stopping this player once he got possession and he wreaked havoc among the Mary’s backline. His control and balance on the ball was a joy to behold. The game was effectively over with ten minutes left to play and it would take goals if Cahersiveen were to get back in contention.
Wing forwards Aoife Curran and Micheál Cronin worked tirelessly all through and linked effectively with the inside line of Barry and younger brother John Vincent O’Dwyer, who helped himself to a classy point in the sixth minute.
St. Marys had a good ten minute spell during which they scored five points but the gap was too wide and again it was “Man Of The Match “ Barry O’Dwyer who helped himself to a further 1-02 before the end and finished with a personal tally of 4-04.
This was a huge display of team football by Waterville and every player can feel very satisfied with their display of skill and commitment. St Marys were unfortunate that their early chances were not turned into scores and in spite of what the scoreline might suggest they are a fine footballing side and will have success too in the future.
Team: Eoin O’Sullivan, Stephen Donnelly, Michael Curran, Sinéad O’Sullivan, Muireann McAuliffe, Cathal Keating, Oran Clifford (Capt), Micheál Cronin, Aoife Curran, John Vincent O’Dwyer (0-01), Barry O’Dwyer (4-04).
Subs: Conor Brown, Jason O’Sullivan, Mary Fitzgerald, Karen Curran, Joshua Thompson, James O’Connor, Oran Mahony, Fionán Clifford, Sam O’Dwyer, Niall Curran.

County League Div 2: Round 5, Waterville V Beaufort ( At Waterville, Sat. June 3rd, 2006)
Waterville 1-11 Beaufort 1-09

Played in Mediterranean-like weather conditions at Waterville on Saturday evening June 3rd the locals claimed both points against Beaufort in round five of the County League.
Waterville had the early scoring opportunities but it was Beaufort’s Frank Courtney who got the opening score after five minutes of play and two minutes later their lively centre forward Michael Hallissey was just wide with free from a good scoring position.
Waterville’s first score came in the eleventh minute when full forward Denis O’Carroll collected a ball out near the right corner, shook off his challengers and pointed from a difficult angle with his right foot. This set the example for his team mates and by the eighteenth minute Waterville had raced into a 1-03 to 0-02 lead with Alan O’Shea deflecting the ball past the helpless Beaufort keeper who had parried a good shot from corner forward Patrick Curran.
Frank Courtney had his second point for Beaufort with twenty minutes gone in the half but again Waterville responded with points from Denis O’Dwyer and John D. O’Shea. Waterville were comfortably ahead at 1-05 to 0-02 with just three minutes left in the half. Careless passing in the midfield and half back areas however allowed Beaufort to put on the pressure and by the time referee Gilligan blew the half time whistle Beaufort had added four more points to their tally and the score stood at Waterville 1-05….Beaufort 0-06 in favour of the home team.
The second half began with Waterville having the early opportunities and after an incisive run through by midfielder Seamus O’Sullivan centre back Haulie Courtney spotted a gap in the Beaufort defence and rifled over a clinically struck point. Beaufort were getting the better of affairs around the middle third of the field and but for the vigilance of the Waterville’s Kevin O’Dwyer in the back line and in particular Buddy O’Shea they may well have caused an upset.
Beaufort pressure paid off in the twentieth minute when they earned a penalty kick which Michael Hallissey converted with power and accuracy and three minutes later they popped over a point which brought the sides level.
What promised to be a comfortable win at one stage now seemed to be slipping away from Waterville but they held their nerve and the introduction of Gearóid O’Sullivan at midfield bolstered that area considerably. They finished the stronger and had two points to spare at the final whistle.
Beaufort can consider themselves a trifle unlucky not to have taken at least a point from this game and it will be considered a wake-up call for Waterville if they have silverware ambitions for later in the season.

U14 Lee Strand County League Div 5 Final: (Con Keating Park, Cahersiveen Wed 24 May)
Waterville / Dromid. 4-14.......... Skellig Rangers / Valentia 5-7

Con Keating Park in Cahersiveen was the venue for this eagerly awaited final between Waterville / Dromid and Skellig / Valentia. The two teams were clearly the strongest in the division and the spectators were looking forward to a close encounter. Within fifty seconds of the throw in Ciaran Keating pointed for Skellig / Valentia after good work by Paul O’Sullivan and O’Sullivan himself pointed two minutes later. Waterville / Dromid needed to settle and in the fourth minute Gearoid O’Sullivan after good play from Christopher Farley kicked over Waterville / Dromid's first point. Paul O’Sullivan pointed again for Valentia / Skellig on seven minutes and within sixty seconds scored Skellig / Valentia's first goal leaving a score of 1-03 to 0-01 after only eight minutes of play. Waterville / Dromid had to knuckle down and tighten up if they were to have any hope of securing victory. On nine minutes Barry O’Dwyer kicked a fine point over and after hard work from the tireless Christopher Farley O’Dwyer netted in the 10th min. Padraig O Sullivan scored a marvellous point for Waterville / Dromid after bursting through the Skellig / Valentia defence. That score brought them right back into the game at 1-03 apiece. Ciaran Keating pointed again and a mistake by the Waterville / Dromid backs let in Karl Mcloughlin who rattled the back of the net. Padraig O’ Sullivan at midfield was having none of it and scored a great goal, which was set up by his twin brother Gearoid and Padraig pointed again within a minute followed by a point each from Barry O’ Dwyer and Gearoid O Sullivan. Paul O Sullivan for Skellig / Valentia pointed from a free on twenty nine minutes but before the half time whistle blew Gearoid O Sullivan for Waterville / Dromid pointed to leave a half time score of 2-07 to 2-05 in favour of Waterville / Dromid.
Forty seconds after the restart Skellig / Valentia had the ball in the back of the net courtesy of Sean O’Sullivan. Again Padraig O’Sullivan stood tall and using his strength powered home a goal after good work from Barry O’Dwyer. On three minutes O’Dwyer pointed again but within four minutes Skellig / Valentia scored two goals in a row leaving the score 3-08 – 5-05 in favour of Skellig / Valentia.
Again Christopher Farley won possession and sent a great ball in to Barry O’Dwyer who found the back of the net. Skellig / Valentia replied with two points from Ciaran Keating and Fionan Falvey, the second in the 18 minute. This was to be their last score and Waterville / Dromid finished the stronger and kicked over a further 6 points to finish worthy winners .
This was a most entertaining game with end to end action throughout. Skellig / Valentia can be very proud of their performance. On the night they played some great football and took some marvellous scores. Best for Skellig / Valentia were Paul O’Sullivan, Sean O’Sullivan, Ciaran Keating, John Curran and Brian Murphy. Best for Waterville / Dromid were Gearoid O Sullivan, Padraig O’ Sullivan, Stephen Donnelly, Barry O’Dwyer, Cathal Keating, Oran Clifford and Christopher Farley who gave a man of the match performance.

County Minor League Div 2B: Waterville/Dromid V Listowel (Played at Beaufort Sat. 19th May 2006)

Waterville / Dromid 1-14 Listowel 1-11

Having met earlier in this competition when Waterville/Dromid ran out comfortable winners Listowel were determined to turn the tables on their southern opponents.
With less than five minutes gone in the game, played at Beaufort, Listowel were three points in front and it looked like we might be in for a shock result. Charlie O'Brien and David Sheehy were causing all sorts of problems for the Waterville/Dromid defence and but for the numerous timely interceptions of Joseph O'Shea Listowel might well have run into an unassailable lead.
Waterville/Dromid's first score came after a foul on Stephen O'Dwyer which he converted himself but immediately Mike O'Leary had one back for Listowel. Kerry minor Patrick Curran opened his account in the thirteenth minute and his team continued to weather the storm, which was intense in the extreme. Listowel ’s pressure bore fruit in the fifteenth minute when David Sheehy goaled to send his side into a five point lead. Indeed, a minute later Waterville / Dromid were fortunate to see another goal bound shot go just wide of the upright.
By now Waterville/Dromid had introduced Niall O'Shea into the forward line and the impact was immediate. Donncha Fenton fielded a long ball that seemed to be going wide, from busy centre back Daniel O'Dwyer. Fenton passed to O'Shea. The latter made no mistake and rattled the net to bring his side back into the game. This was the lift Waterville/Dromid needed and they went on to score the next three points to take the lead for the first time.
By the break however the sides were level again at 1-06 apiece with Listowel having had by far the better of things in the first period but hadn't pressed home their advantage on the scoreboard.
Listowel's Mike O'Leary had the opening score of the second half in the third minute but again Denis Donnelly converted a glorious free off the ground from all of fifty metres to level affairs again. Waterville/Dromid were beginning to get a grip on the game and started to take advantage of far better possession. By the thirteenth minute the signs were more promising for Waterville/Dromid with a three point lead but again it was the lively Charlie O'Brien who kept his side in touch with a sweetly struck free with fifteen minutes left in the game.
Kerry minor captain Patrick Curran continued to orchestrate play up front for Waterville /Dromid and set up a number of scoring chances for his colleagues while helping himself to a few as well in spite of the close attention of the Listowel defence.
Listowel fought 'till the end and but for the alertness of keeper Brian O'Leary in the Waterville/Dromid goal who deflected a shot around the post in the last seconds the game would have ended in stalemate.
These were two fine footballing sides but in the end the strength of Patrick Curran up front, Denis Donnelly who was majestic at midfield and the sweeping role of Joseph O'Shea in defence was the difference. Listowel were best served by Charlie O'Brien, David Sheehy and Mike O'Leary.
Team: Brian O'Leary, Greg Gibson, Alan O'Dwyer, Dean Murphy, Dominic O'Sullivan, Daniel O'Dwyer, Niall Fitzgerald, Cormac O'Sullivan, Denis Donnelly, Joseph O'Shea, Donncha Fenton, Kieran O'Shea, Stephen O'Dwyer, Patrick Curran, Daniel Curran. Sub: Niall O'Shea
Scorers: Patrick Curran 0-06 (1 Free), Niall O'Shea 1-02, Kieran O'Shea 0-03, Stephen O'Dwyer 0-02 (2 Frees) , Denis Donnelly (1 free)

Intermediate Championship: Waterville V Glenflesk (At Waterville, Saturday 13th May 2006)

Waterville 3-06 Glenflesk 1-08

Waterville played hosts to Glenflesk in the first round of this year's Intermediate Championship. After a wonderful summer like day the rain started to come down just as referee Twiss threw in the ball to get matters under way. Conditions were good and the rain didn't last very long.
Glenflesk started the brighter and had a number of scoring chances early on while Waterville were finding it difficult to penetrate at the other end
It took until the seventh minute to open the scoring and this came via a Glenflesk free from the boot of full forward S. O'Donoghue. Waterville had a free scoring opportunity shortly afterwards but failed to convert. Waterville did open their account in the fourteenth minute when John D O'Shea collected a ball near the left corner flag, spotted Alan O'Shea in a good position in front of goal and O'Shea slotted the ball between the posts with ease. It was the same O'Shea who pushed Waterville in front in the twenty first minute after wing back Kevin O'Dwyer had won a difficult ball out near the sideline. Each side had scoring chances but both defences were solid and we had to wait till the twenty fourth minute for the next score which went to Glenflesk after some excellent forward interplay.
With a minute left in the half Denis Donnelly who was having a fine game at midfield found Waterville's Denis O'Carroll. O'Carroll was fouled and John D O'Shea converted the resultant free. Waterville were ahead by the minimum with just seconds left in the half but then a lapse of concentration in the defence alllowed Kerry and Glenflesk stalwarth through to finish the ball to the net with the outside of his right boot. This was a devastating blow to the home side and Glenflesk went in at the break two points in front.
Waterville faced the stiffening breeze in the second half and within a minute Glenflesk extended their lead with a well taken point by J B O'Donoghue. John D O'Shea for Waterville converted a free a minute later after a foul on Patrick Curran who had made an incisive run down along the stand sideline.
In the fourth minute came the score that turned the tide in Waterville's favour. After some hard graft by Kevin O'Dwyer and Denis O'Carroll the ball came to wing forward Darren Riordan who struck a glorious goal to lift Watervilles spirits to a new level. Two minutes later Watervlle won a free about forty five metres out from the Glenflesk goal. Young minor footballer Denis Donnelly was asked to take on the kick which he did with style and accuracy to edge Waterville further ahead. Glenflesk held their nerve and pulled back two points through J B and S O'Donoghue. Waterville were by now playing the better football and Kevin O'Dwyer, who was having a solid game in defence, found county minor captain Patrick Curran who rifled the ball to the back of the Glenflesk net. Waterville had a three point cushion and again it was Donnelly who sent over a forty five into the increasing breeze.
Less than five minutes later Keith Moran who worked the field tirelessly delivered a pinpoint pass to Denis O'Carroll who raised the green flag for the third time for Waterville. The home team were seven ponts ahead and victory looked secure with just three minutes left in the game. Glenflesk threw everything into attack in the final moments and managed three more points before the final whistle.

Team: Bernard Murphy, Shane Coffey, Seamus O’Shea, Michael Curran, Buddy O’Shea, Haulie Courtney, Kevin O’Dwyer, Seamus O’Sullivan, Denis Donnelly, Darren Riordan, Patrck Curran, Keith Moran, Alan O’Shea, Denis O’Carroll, John D O’Shea
Scorers: Patrick Curran, Darren O'Riordan & Denis O'Carroll (1 goal each), Denis Donnelly 0-02 (2 frees), John D O'Shea 0-02 (2 frees), Alan O'Shea 0-02.

County Minor Semi-Final: Watervlle/Dromid V Gneeveguilla (Friday May 5th at Keel)

Waterville / Dromod 4-13 Gneeveguilla 0-09

Waterville / Dromod minors reached the final of Div 2 of the Minor County League on Friday evening last, 5th May. The game was played in Keel and that club deserve great credit for the condition of the pitch considering the inclement weather of late.
Our boys shouldn't get carried away by the margin of victory however. Gneeveguilla are a fine side and on another day might have put away more of their scoring opportunities. For the first twenty minutes the game was very much in the balance. Stephen O'Dwyer was first to score in the fifth minute and within a minute keeper Brian O'Leary saved a point blank shot from a Gneeveguilla attacker. This was a crucial save and set an example for the the rest of the defence for the remainder of the game.
Kerry minor captain Patrick Curran commanded a lot of attention, having to deal with two Gneeveguilla defenders for much of the game. His two first half goals were wonderfully taken and at half time Waterville / Dromod lead by 2-05 to 0-04.
The second half began with Waterville / Dromod kicking over two more points in the first three mnutes. It was goalie O'Leary again who pulled off a terrific save in the fifth minute and again deprived Gneeveguilla of what seemed a certain goal. Waterville / Dromod extended their lead and in the last few minutes netted twice through Donncha Fenton and Denis Donnelly. Gneeveguilla tagged on a few points but the margin had become too great by then.
Corner forward D. J. O'Connor for Gneeveguilla was outstanding for his side and to most observers of this game should be considered for inclusion in the County Minor team. He showed skill and ball control of the highest calibre and was a joy to watch.

County League Div 2: Round 4 St Michaels / Filemore V Waterville ( At Ballinskelligs Sat. April 22nd, 2006)

Waterville 1-12 St. Michaels / Filemore 0-06

In a wet Ballinskelligs on Saturday evening Waterville proved too strong for the locals in the fourth game of this year’s County League and collected both points.
St. Michaels / Filemore opened the scoring in the fourth minute with a point but Waterville were quick to respond with a fine point from Donncha Fenton. This was young Fenton’s first start for the seniors and it was great to see him getting on the score sheet so early. Seamus O’Sullivan at midfield extended Waterville’s lead after some excellent approach play from wing forward Darren Riordan. Indeed, Riordan had a point of his own soon afterwards and midway through the half Waterville were coasting and were in control throughout the field but only had a two point lead at the break and led on the score of 0-6 to 0-4.
Immediately after the restart the hosts reduced the lead to a single point through a free but midfielder Denis O’Dwyer kicked over a point from a difficult free. With fifteen minutes left Waterville got a fortuitous goal through an Alan O’Shea effort to make the score 1-07 to 0-06.
This turned out to be the deciding score and from then to the finish it was Waterville all the way. Points from John D O’Shea, Denis O’Dwyer and Donncha Fenton added further to Bally / Filemore’s woes and by the final whistle Waterville’s winning margin was extended to nine points.

County League Div 2: Round 3 Dromid V Waterville (Played at Dromid, Saturday April 15th, 2006)

Waterville 1-10 Dromid 1-09

In round three of the County League Waterville were entertained by near neighbours Dromid Pearses. This was the third meeting of the sides thus far this year with a win apiece.
Dromid were first off the mark through a Kieran Bobby O'Sullivan free but Patrick Curran had matters level a minute later after some good work by wing forward Gearóid O'Sullivan and it was Curran again who sent his side into the lead with a terrific point from the stand sideline into the road end from a distance of forty metres.
Again it was Kieran Bobby who brought his side level when a Waterville defender was penalised for holding his opponent off the ball. Patrick Curran and Bobby swapped frees midway through the half and the play was end to end stuff much to the delight of the respective supporters. By half time Dromid were just in front by a single point on the score of 0-06 to 0-05. The standard of play was good with both sides contesting every ball with tenacity and sportmanship.

Dromid extended their lead three minutes nto the second half through the ever reliable boot of Kieran Bobby who converted another free after a Waterville defender touched the ball on the ground. But then the crucial score came for Waterville when Patrick Curran intercepted a Dromid pass, dodged a few tackles and found full forward Denis O'Carroll with a a pinpoint pass. O'Carroll finished clinically to the right corner of the net with only four minutes gone in the second half and Waterville were now a point in front. It was O'Carroll again a minute later who fielded a difficult ball, turned and rifled over for a fine point with his left foot.
Waterville were now two points ahead and playing with much greater confidence. Dromid defended well and worked the ball efficiently out of defence but it was Waterville's Patrick Curran who extended the lead with a free after a foul on himself. Waterville had the upper hand for the final quarter and when "Man Of The Match" Denis O'Carroll kicked the point of the match from all of forty five metres out it looked like Waterville's day.
But the game is never over until the final whistle sounds and with just thirty seconds left a high ball into the Waterville goal area was deflected into the net by a Waterville defender to reduce the margin to the minimum. In spite of Dromid pressure Waterville held out to claim both points much to the collective relief of their supporters in this extremely entertaining game.

County League Div 2: Round 2 Waterville V Annascaul (Played at Waterville Sunday April 2nd 2006)

Waterville 1-07 V Annascaul 0-14

After a wet soggy week the sun shone gloriously over the village for the meeting between Waterville and Annascaul in round two of the County League.
The locals played into the Beenbane goal for the first half and were first off the mark when Patrick Curran sent a long ball across the Annascaul large area from close to the right corner flag. The ball was fielded by Denis O’Carroll, who quickly found the unmarked Keith Moran, who made no mistake with his left foot. Then in the seventh minute it was O’Carroll again who finished to the net after Denis O’Dwyer had intercepted a careless pass out of the Annascaul defence. This was a dream start for Waterville and they seemed to be on course for a possible win. The defence was playing well but a few scoring chances went a begging.

Genie Farrell for Annascaul opened his side’s account after twelve minutes with a free and within five minutes added two more. Then in the nineteenth minute Waterville attacker Gearóid O’Sullivan won a ball out on the lake sideline and quickly found midfielder Niall Moran. Moran sent a long pinpoint, cross-field pass to Patrick Curran, which Curran slotted with ease between the posts.
Annascaul held their nerve and hauled themselves back into the game through the outstanding Niall Sheehy at midfield and the ever reliable and elusive Genie Farrell in attack. At half time it was all square at 1-04 to 0-07.
Annascaul started the brighter in the second half and ran into an early lead. Waterville were under pressure in most sectors and midway through the half had built up a four point lead. Waterville however missed a number of good scoring opportunities, which were to prove expensive in the end. Substitute John D O’Shea got Waterville’s opening score of the half in the twenty second minute through a free and a minute later Patrick Curran followed with a fine score from play. The margin was now down to a manageable three points. Again it was Genie Farrell who widened the gap to four points with just four minutes left in the game.

With two minutes left Waterville were awarded a penalty after a foul on full forward Denis O’Carroll. Patrick Curran took on the responsibility but his powerful shot rebounded off the crossbar. Immediately, the ball went upfield and resulted in another point for the visitors. Waterville had one more point before the end but had to settle for second best on this occasion.

County League Div 2: Round 1 ...Finuge 1-08 .....Waterville 0-11 (Sunday 19th March)

Finuge 1-08 V Waterville 0-11

Played in summer like conditions Finuge played hosts to Waterville in the opening game of this year’s County League Division 2.
The new, young Waterville mid field pairing of Gearóid O’Sullivan and Denis Donnelly had a big test on their hands, which they passed with
flying colours. Though Finuge had the first opportunity to score it was midfielder O’Sullivan who first raised the white flag after taking a pass from Denis O’Dwyer. Patrick Curran further extended Waterville’s lead with a free when Haulie Courtney was fouled after breaking forward from his centre back position.
Finuge had their first score from the boot of Jack Corridon with a well taken opportunity out to the right of the Waterville goal and the same player repeated the feat five minutes later to draw the teams level.
The game developed into a keenly contested affair with both sides playing well. Keith Moran edged his side in front midway through the half,
when he stroked a left footed kick towards the Finuge goal and left the goalie with no option but to tip it over the bar. Again it was Jack Corridon for Finuge who levelled two minutes later.
With ten minutes left in the half Denis Donnelly rose high above all others and punched forward a Finuge kick out. With play, which involved Keith Moran, Denis Donnelly and Patrick Curran the ball came back to John D O’Shea who kicked a delightful point.
The game continued to flow from end to end and involved some great skills from both teams, especially the sure fielding of veteran Buddy O’Shea when danger was imminent. The return of under twenty one player Mike Curran was also a huge bonus to the reds. But every game has its errors and this was no exception. A Waterville back hurriedly kicked a free straight into the hands of a Finuge attacker and again the sides were level. Kerry senior Eamonn Fitzmaurice edged his side in front with a minute left in the half. With time almost up Paul Galvin who manned the centre back position broke through from near his own goal but was met shoulder to shoulder by Waterville full forward Denis O’Carroll with the force of a Sherman tank. The ball fell loose, came to Patrick Curran who levelled the sides again. At half time the teams went in at five points apiece.
Gearóid O’Sullivan won the throw in for the start of the second half and Patrick Curran sent Waterville into the lead again with less than thirty seconds played but again Finuge levelled.
Waterville missed a number of good scoring opportunities in the first few minutes but then Paul Galvin for Finuge broke upfield, spotted an unmarked colleague who rifled the ball to the Waterville net. This was a heart breaking score from Waterville’s point of view.
However, instead of despair Waterville upped their game and played with renewed passion. Most of the play happened in the Finuge half for the
remainder of this game. Finuge defended well but by the twentieth minute Waterville were back on level terms through John D O’Shea, Denis O’Carroll and Patrick Curran.
With four minutes left Alan O’Shea again edged Waterville ahead after some wonderful interplay involving six or seven players but then against the run of play a careless pass allowed Finuge down field to again level matters. With a minute left Patrick Curran converted a free and it looked like the points would be heading south. But the tale had a final twist when a Waterville defender lost a simple ball and Paul Galvin kicked the equaliser.
This was a most entertaining game of football and some credit must go to referee Carroll from Asdee. Both teams will be content with a point as
a start to their County League campaigns.

South Kerry League Play-Off: Dromid Pearses 1-06 Watervile 1-00 (Pr. An Phiarsaigh 12th March)

Dromid Pearses 1-06 Waterville 1-00

Conditions were extremely difficult at Páirc an Phiarsaigh for the meeting of Waterville and Dromid to decide who would contest the South Kerry League semi-final of 2006. Waterville had comfortably won the earlier encounter three weeks previously but on this occasion Dromid were on home turf and were determined to turn the tables. After the throw in Dromid were first to attack but five minutes in it was Waterville who had the first score when Denis O’Dwyer sent a long hopeful kick towards the Dromid goal. The ball swerved, deceived the keeper and ended up in the net. This was the start that any team would wish for. It was as good as it got for Waterville however and turned out to be their only score of the entire game. Both defences were well on top but in the seventeenth minute Dromid made the break through and kicked the opening point of the game. Six minutes later a dashing run by defender Aidan Shine O’Sullivan saw that players shot deflected over the crossbar by the Waterville keeper. Numerous mistakes were made by both sets of players but it was Colm O’Connor who levelled affairs in the thirty fifth minute with a terrific kick from near the stand sideline. The extra time was due to a leg injury to Waterville defender Eoin Moriarty who had been playing extremely well. After half time a Patrick Curran free was deflected for a forty five and in the third minute Denis O’Dwyer might have been a hero but his shot for what seemed a certain goal went just wide of the of the Dromid upright. John D O’Shea had a similar opportunity two minutes later but again the chance was missed. It seemed as if it was only a matter of time before Waterville would penetrate the Dromid defence and in the twelfth minute Denis O’Dwyer might have had another goal after some excellent work by Buddy O’Shea, Keith Moran and Patrick Curran but again the return was nil. Waterville also had a number of point chances but failed to capitalise. Dromid were living dangerously but defended resolutely and with fifteen minutes left in the game Fergal O’Connor made no mistake and finished the ball to the Waterville net. This score lifted the Pearses and they dominated the remainder of the game. Their controlled play out of defence allowed Kieran “Bobby” O’Sullivan to kick a glorious point in the seventeenth minute to further add to Waterville’s woes. They had two more points before the final whistle and deservedly booked their place in the league semi-final of 2006.

South Kerry League: St. Michaels/Foilmore V Waterville (At Ballinskelligs, Saturday 4th March 2006)
St. Michaels/ Foilmore 1-06 Waterville 0-06

It's been said so often that goals win matches and that proved to be the case on Saturday, February fourth at Ballinskelligs when St. Michaels/Foilmore played hosts to Waterville in the South Kerry League.
Bernard Kelly might have been first to score for Bally/Foilmore but his free was just wide of the Waterville uprights in the third minute. Waterville also had a number of early scoring chances and one decent goal chance but it was Sean Fogarty who sent the hosts in front in the ninth minute. The lead was short lived however when Waterville centre back Haulie Courtney, who was having another storming game, took on the opposing backs. He worked his way up field close to the Bally/Foilmore goal but was fouled out on the right. He took the free himself and the sides were level.
The Waterville defence were playing well and none more so than the aforementioned Courtney. Captain for the day and birthday boy Shane Coffey was solid in his new role at full back. Putting the ball between the opposition's posts was the old problem and in the end proved to be Waterville's undoing.
Sean Fogarty had his second point from all of forty metres in the nineteenth minute but immediately Waterville defence set up yet another good attack which paid dividends when Niall Moran kicked a post splitting shot and again the sides were level.
Waterville were in control for most of the first half and the prospects looked promising for the second when they would have slope and wind advantage. But then in a lapse of concentration a Bally / Foilmore forward was allowed stick the ball in the net when it might so easily have been cleared. This proved to be a crucial score and turned out to be the difference in the end. At the break Bally / Foilmore led by 1-03 to 0-02.
After the break again Waterville started the livelier and had two points within five minutes. The deficit was now just two points but Waterville would have to wait until the twenty fourth minute for the next score. On the other hand Bally/Foilmore grew in confidence, controlled much of the second half and added three points to their first half tally.
For the final ten minutes Waterville upped their efforts considerably but in vain and Bally/Foilmore deservedly took the spoils.
Waterville must now meet with Dromid Pearses in a play-off to see who makes it to the league semi-final. This game is scheduled to take place next Sunday. The venue is not known at this point.

South Kerry League: Waterville 1-12 V Dromid Pearses 0-06 (At Waterville Feb 25th 2006)

Waterville 1-12 Dromid Pearses 0-06

In the second round of the South Kerry League Waterville played host to Dromid Pearses on Saturday 25th of February. The home side had breeze advantage in the first half and certainly made the most of it. In less than half a minute Patrick Curran had Waterville's opening scoe with a fine left footed kick. Two minutes later Dromid's Colm O'Connor was just wide of the Waterville uright and almost immediately wily corner forward John Curran drove his shot for goal into the side netting and again Waterville survived.
By the tenth minute however Waterville had raced into a five point lead with Dromid yet to score. Parick Curran converted a free in the fourteenth minute after a foul on debut senior player Denis Donnelly. Three minutes later Kieran Bobby O'Sullivan opened Pearses account when he took on the Waterville defence and kicked a fine point. Then a defensive error by Dromid led to the ball arriving at the hands of Patrick Curran who rifled to the left corner of the Dromid net. Waterville continued to use the direct ball to good effect and at half time were ahead on the scoreline of 1-10 to 0-01.
Dromid had breeze assistance for the second half but the mountain was too high to climb. Their ill luck continued when John Curran hit the Waterville upright in the sixth minute and both sides had shots come back off the crossbar. Dromid added five points to their first half tally and Waterville had two more points against the breeze.
In the end Waterville ran out comfortable winners on the scorline of... Waterville 1-12....Dromid Pearses 0-06.

South Kerry League: Waterville V Sneem: (At Sneem, Sun. February 19th, 2006)

Waterville 0-09 Sneem 0-09

This year's South Kerry League got underway in glorious sunshine at Sneem on Sunday 19th February, eventhough there was still a chill in the air.
Within the first minute Denis O'Carroll might have been the first to score in the '06 season but his shot for a point went agonisingly wide of the left upright. Sneem however, were first on the scoreboard through a free after a Waterville defender was adjudged to have picked the ball directly from the ground. In spite of Waterville putting on the early pressure it was Sneem who went two points ahead through another free in the sixth minute.
Waterville finally got the first score of the season in the eight minute through the boot of Patrick Curran who converted a free after a foul on Denis O'Carroll who had made a surging run from midfield up along the river sideline. Two minutes later some good interplay saw Gearóid O'Sullivan deliver a telling pass to lively wing back Darren O'Riordan who in turn sent in a low ball to Patrick Curran. Curran was fouled and he converted the free himself to level affairs. The same player might have raised the green flag three minutes later when he deflected a high ball with his back to goal but the ball went inches wide of the right upright.
In the remaining fifteen minutes of the half it was Sneem in control and but for a reflex save by Waterville keeper Bernard Murphy in the twentieth minute Sneem would surely have netted . At half time Sneem were ahead on the scoreline of six points to three
.
Within a minute of the restart Denis O'Dwyer converted a glorious free, fifty metres out, close to the stand sideline. This was the boost Waterville needed and soon afterwards Patrick kicked a fine left footed point after a pass from Alan O'Shea. But in the sixth minute disaster seemed imminent when Sneem were awarded a penalty but the agility of substitute goalie Ciarán Dennehy saved the shot and the day for his side. Within another minute Patrick Curran had the sides level again with another terrific point from all of forty metres.
With fifteen minute left Waterville had edged two points ahead and it looked like they might snatch the spoils. Sneem were not about to throw in the towel however and had turned the tables with further three points to take the lead again with just five minutes left in the game. On the stroke of full time Denis O'Dwyer was fouled about thirty five metres out. Patrick Curran stepped up, took on the challenge and kicked the free to force a draw.

For the first game of the new football season this was most sporting and entertaining. A draw was a fair result and it was encouraging to see some of our young players make their senior debuts and acquit themselves well.

Team: Bernard Murphy, Shane Coffey, Seamus O'Shea, Kevin O'Dwyer, Darren Riordan, Haulie Courtney, Eoin Moriarty, Gearóid O'Sullivan, Niall Moran, Alan O'Shea, Denis O'Dwyer, Denis O'Carroll, Fergal Cronin, Fenton Daly, Patrick Curran

South Kerry Junior Chapionship Final 2005: (Con Keating Park Jan 7th 2006 )

Waterville 2-09 Renard 0-09

It may not have attracted anything like the same number of spectators as the South Kerry Senior Final or indeed the Minor Final but the men from Renard and Waterville served up a fine game of football in the final of the 2005 Junior Championship at Con Keating Park, Cahersiveen on Saturday, seventh of January.
This is a most important competition in that it affords an opportunity to players who are approaching the twilight period of their playing careers and those at the beginning of their senior careers to mix and blend their abilities and experiences.
The day was cold but dry and those who braved the elements were treated to an hour of intriguing championship football. Renard played into the town goal in the first half and into a slight breeze.

Waterville were first off the mark with a point from John B. O’Shea and the same player doubled his tally a minute later after receiving a long ball from defender Mike O’Shea. Renard’s Cian McCrohan was unfortunate in the fifth minute when his shot for a point hit the upright and went harmlessly wide. Two minutes later it was Waterville’s Donncha Fenton who found himself in space and seemed to be through for a certain score but his shot rebounded off the crossbar.
Renard’s Stephen O’Sullivan opened his side’s account in the ninth minute with a free and this gave new impetus to his side who began to dominate matters around the middle area of the pitch through Aidan and Kieran O’Sullivan. However, Waterville’s attack was the more threatening and though the supply of ball was scant at times they made the most of it and the pressure paid dividends in the tenth minute when Darren O’Riordan’s shot hit the Renard upright and the wily Dan Fitz was on hand to finish to the Renard net.
Renard continued to dominate around midfield and with ten minutes left in the half, Renard midfielder Aidan O’Sullivan kicked a wonderful left footed point for his side to reduce the margin to three points. Straight away a long kick in by Waterville’s centre back Buddy O’Shea was flicked over the bar by the towering Waterville full forward Paul Galvin with his back to the goal. Renard pulled back two points through the boot of marksman supreme Stephen O’Sullivan.
The final score of the half came from Waterville’s Darren O’Riordan with a superb effort from all of forty metres on the stand side. Indeed, it was this young player who gave an exhibition of wing back play that ensured victory for his team and earned him the accolade of “Man of the Match”.
While Waterville led at the break it was Renard who might have considered themselves to be a little unfortunate to be in arrears. Waterville defence stood solid and kept their side in the game. From the throw in Renard’s Declan O’Neill got possession and a great goal chance was shot agonisingly wide of the Waterville posts. Waterville had moved Paul Galvin to midfield for the second period and this turned the tide in their favour. Denis Donnelly extended Waterville’s lead through a well struck free and a minute later Aidan O’Sullivan for Renard was unfortunate with a shot that went marginally wide of the Waterville posts. Most of the pressure was now being inflicted by Waterville and Dan Fitz had another point in the sixth minute after some great work by Paul Galvin who was beginning to field everything that came his way and stamp his authority on the midfield area. Stephen O’Sullivan converted a difficult line ball in the eleventh minute and immediately followed with another a minute later about forty metres out in front of the goal. These were two wonderfully struck scores and emphasised the value of a reliable place kicker. Renard were again going through a good patch and but for some erratic shooting might have reduced the deficit considerably. Dan Fitz had his third score of the game with just fifteen minutes left in the game and Denis Donnelly kicked over a free two minutes later. The margin was now five points and the Jerry Egan trophy seemed destined for Waterville.
Renard had a golden goal chance in the twentieth minute when a low ball across the Waterville goal area needed the slightest of touches but alas for Renard there was nobody there to finish it to the net. Had this chance been put away the game would have been wide open again. Aidan O’Sullivan at midfield for Renard kicked another sweet left footed point from thirty five metres after some fine work from the Renard defence. Immediately, from the kick out the ball was driven upfield and was pulled on by John B. O’Shea from an acute angle close to the end line on the right and it sailed between the Renard posts.
Classy Renard centre forward Stephen Curran reduced the deficit to four points again with an excellent individual score in the twenty eighth minute but it was all too little too late, especially when some tenacious defending by Waterville’s Darren O’Riordan found Alan O’Dwyer in space and this young player rifled the ball to the Renard net, giving keeper Alan Egan no chance. Stephen Curran kicked over another point for Renard well into injury time but by now Waterville were assured of the spoils.
This was an excellent game of football and full credit to both sets of players who provided a terrific, competitive game at this late stage in the ’05 GAA season.
