South Kerry Senior Championship Final Replay
Waterville 0-10 V Skellig Rangers 2-05
The line between victory and defeat can be so fine but none more so than at Con Keating Park on Stephen’s Day 2006. Waterville unfortunately came out on the wrong side of the result and will have to wait another year to strive to capture Jack Murphy
The first game on Saturday the 23rd of December was a cliffhanger and ended all square. The general consensus was that we had witnessed the best final for many years and that neither team deserved to lose. True indeed but would the replay live up to it? The answer is well and truly yes. The football, courage, honesty and skill levels were supreme and at the end of normal time the teams were again tied. ( Report ) |
South Kerry Senior Final 2006
Waterville 2-08............ Skellig Rangers 2-08

Waterville seniors drew with Skellig Rangers at Con Keating Park on Saturday 23rd Dec in front of an appreciative crowd. Weather conditions were perfect and full marks to St Marys for preparing the pitch.
This was a game of the highest calibre and both sides deserve another crack at capturing Jack Murphy.
The game of Gaelic football was the big winner on this occasion and the replay is eagerly awaited on St. Stephen's Day.
We all look forward to similar fare on Tuesday and with a little luck Jack will reside in Beenbane for the coming year.
Final Replay : Tuesday 26th @ 2:00pm in Cahersiveen.....Be There!!

South Kerry Champs 1976
"Time surely flies" goes the old saying. As it is South Kerry Championship time again it may be worth having a nostalgic look back at the winning team of thirty years ago.
Waterville went into the final against Sneem as defending champions and successfully defended their title.
What was the score ? What was the team line out ? Who captained the team? Where was the game played ? In what month was the game played ? What colour were the jerseys ?

Kerry Capture 34th All Ireland Title (Sept 17th 2006)
Kerry 4-15 Mayo 3-05
What an occasion for Dromid Pearses man Declan O'Sullivan when he lifted the Sam Maguire trophy in front of a crowd in excess of eighty two thousand!
Declan more than justified his selection on the team with a fine personal display and scored 1-02 as well. Thoughtful touch to invite Colm Cooper to lift the cup with him. That's sport. Click the pic to see Declan on the big screen.
The game itself was effectively over after the first quarter of an hour eventhough Mayo caused a stir with a few goals just before half time. Kerry players were dominant in all sectors and we were treated to exhibition type football for most of the game.
Full credit to team manager Jack O'Connor and his backroom staff who had the team in peak form at the right time.
Supporting the captain was his brother Dominic and dad Francie along with other members of the family. There was also a large contingent of relations, some of whom travelled from the States.
Unfortunately cousin Jacqueline and husband Mike in New Zealand couldn't make it as they have an impending event. Click the pic to see more.

Minor All Ireland Final (Sept 17th 2006)
Kerry 0-15 Roscommon 0-15
Waterville clubman Patrick Curran led the county team in the minor final and his display earned him the accolade of "Man Of The Match". He had a personal tally of eight points, six of which were from play....not a bad return on the slippery turf of Croke Park.
It seemed early on that Kerry were going to take the title when they led by eight points to three. Roscommon fought back and it seemed as if they might snatch it in the end. We were hoping for a double success and that possibility is still very much alive
This was a marvellous game and both sides deserve huge credit. The replay will take place next Saturday in Ennis so make sure to be there and support Brendy Donnelly (selector), Patrick and the minor team!
Waterville supporters, along with their Dromid neighbours, met at their regular watering hole, The Findlater on Dorset Street.
Roll on Ennis next Saturday!!

Barrett Cup
Waterville 1-06 Stacks 0-07
Captain Paul Galvin led his team to victory over a fancied Austin Stacks side in the final of the Barratt Cup played in the panoramic setting of Beaufort on Sunday September tenth.
Stacks were first to score through a free after just thirty seconds but Eoin Curran latched on to a rebound a minute later to raise the green flag for his side and send Waterville into the lead which they held on to 'till the end of the game. Stacks had numerous scoring chances in the first half but failed to capitalise and Waterville led on the scoreline of 1-03 to 0-03 at the break.
Waterville were wasteful in the second half but still managed to hold out in spite of Stacks testing the woodwork on more than one occasion.
The game was played in a fine sporting manner and full credit to both sides.
Click the picture above to see some of our old friends at the game, eventhough on this occasion they were cheering for the opposition.
John Twiss, representing the county board, presented Paul Galvin with the Barret Cup to the delight of the sizeable Waterville contingent who made the trip to support their team. |
County League
Spa 0-11 Waterville 1-16
In a wonderfully contested game of football played at Killarney on Saturday 12 th August, Waterville emerged victorious over Spa in round seven of the County League.
Waterville’s Alan O’Shea was first on the score sheet within the first minute with a fisted point but some defensive indiscipline by Waterville allowed Spa level through a free three minutes later via the boot of lively corner forward Niall O’Mahony and the same player added another point two minutes later.

Waterville Capture Junior League Title 2006
Waterville 0-12 Renard 0-10
Having overcome Valentia in the semi-final on Tues evening after extra time in a marvellous game of football, Waterville were faced with their scond outing in the space of four days.
In a keenly contested county final Waterville just shaded it against Renard in what turned out to be a fine sporting contest at Cahersiveen on Friday evening 28th of July.
Waterville had the initial scoring opportunities but it was Stephen O’Sullivan who opened Renard’s account through a free in the fourth minute and two minutes later the stylish Aidan O’Sullivan extended their lead with a terrific score from close to the stand sideline about forty five metres out. Renard were at this stage much the more eager and the Waterville defence were under severe pressure. This was further compounded when Joe McCrohan added another point for his side with Waterville yet to score.
In the ninth minute Paul Galvin for Waterville delivered a long ball from midfield to veteran full forward Dan Fitz. He in turn delivered to Danny Walsh in the left corner. Walsh slipped his marker and coolly kicked over from a tight angle. Waterville lifted their game at this point but it was Renard’s Maurice O’Neill who kicked the next point to restore their three point lead. Report

Patrick Curran Leads Kerry Minors to Victory
Kerry 1-13 Tipperary 0-08

Congratulations to Patrick Curran, son of Liz and Laurence, who captained the Kerry minor team and brought the ESB Munster Minor Trophy to the village on Sunday evening. There was a huge body of friends and team mates waiting to welcome Patrick home and congratulate him on a memorable achievement.
In the game itself Patrick led by example’ kicking some wonderful scores (0-06) and delivering numerous pinpoint passes to his colleagues in better scoring positions.
Well done also to Brendy Donnelly who is a selector with the team and we wish them both the very best of luck in the All Ireland quarter-final in a few weeks time. |

Under 14 County Championship Final
South Kerry 7-10 West Kerry 2-14

A score of 2-06 would be regarded as a decent score in most games but this was the personal tally of South Kerry Captain Barry O'Dwyer as he led his team to victory in this year's under fourteen county championship final. The South Kerry boys proved too strong and elusive for the boys from the west and eventhough they were only a point behind with five minutes left in the first half, by the break South Kerry added another three goals and three points.
After resumption of play South Kerry consolidated their position and went on to win comfortably. Other Watervlle players involved in the panel were Stephen Donnelly,Micheál Curran, Oran Clifford, Micheál Cronin and Cathal Keating
The team was managed and trained by our own Darby Clifford.
Munster Minor Championship
Kerry 4-11 Limerick 0-09

Kerry Minor captain Patrick Curran led his team to victory over Limerick at Austin Stack Park on Wednesday 28th June 2006 in this year's Munster Minor Football Championship. Lining out at full forward Patrick was first to score and had a personal tally of five points. He was the main thorn in the side of the Limerick defence and earned the accolade of "Man of The Match".
This is Patrick's third year being involved in the county minor panel and it may well be third time lucky. Patrick and his team will meet Tipperary, who defeated Cork by a single point in the other semi final, in the Munster Final on July the ninth..
We wish Patrick and Brendy Donnelly (selector) the very best of luck on that occasion.

Community Games
Two of our young athletes competed recently in the national finals of the Community Games at Mosney County Meath. Having represented the parishes of Dromod / Caherdaniel in the county ompetitions on Easter Monday both girls were selected to represent Kerry and travelled to Killarney and Tralee for training under the guidance of J J Crowley, John Bunyan and Eamonn Whelan.
Karen Curran was on the county under 13 cross country mixed team which consisted of five boys and five girls and they achieved second place in the national finals.
Mary Fitzgerald was on the under 14 girls relay team and her team came fifth overall.
Girls Primary Skills 2006

Well done also to Aoife and Ciara Fitzgerald along with Joanna Curran who won the South Kerry section of the Girls Primary Gaelic Skills Competition. In the County Finals they ended up just a point behind the winners Scoil MhicEasmainn from Tralee. They eventually ended up in third place after a play off. Well done to all the above. Under 14 South Kerry "A" Final
Waterville 4-05 St. Marys 0-06
Contrary to many predictions Waterville took the Under 14 South Kerry “A” title at Waterville on Saturday 10th of June.
After a spell of fine weather conditions deteriorated with wind and rain playing a major part in the day’s proceedings.
In the first half Waterville faced into the elements knowing that their task was not going to be an easy one since in an earlier meeting in the competition Cahersiveen had won comprehensively.
From the throw in by referee Michael Curran Waterville showed they were determined to make amends for the earlier defeat. Report
New Supporter

A special welcome to our newest supporter Colette Curran. Colette's husband Neilie died at an extremely young age and was one of the best footballers to don the red jersey of Waterville.
Aoife, daughter of Neilie and Colette played a major role in Waterville's victory in the under 14 final on Saturday last. Click the picture to see the welcoming ceremony. |
Under 14 County League Final
Waterville / Dromid 4-14 Skellig Rangers / Valentia 5-7
Con Keating Park in Cahersiveen was the venue for this eagerly awaited final between Waterville / Dromid and Skellig / Valentia. The two teams were clearly the strongest in the division and the spectators were looking forward to a close encounter. Within fifty seconds of the throw in Ciaran Keating pointed for Skellig / Valentia after good work by Paul O’Sullivan and O’Sullivan himself pointed two minutes later. Waterville / Dromid needed to settle and in the fourth minute Gearoid O’Sullivan after good play from Christopher Farley kicked over Waterville / Dromid's first point. Paul O’Sullivan pointed again for Valentia / Skellig on seven minutes and within sixty seconds scored Skellig / Valentia's first goal leaving a score of 1-03 to 0-01 after only eight minutes of play. Waterville / Dromid had to knuckle down and tighten up if they were to have any hope of securing victory. On nine minutes Barry O’Dwyer kicked a fine point over and after hard work from the tireless Christopher Farley O’Dwyer netted in the 10th min. Padraig O Sullivan scored a marvellous point for Waterville / Dromid after bursting through the Skellig / Valentia defence. Report

Waterville/Dromid Win Minor Football League
Waterville / Dromid 1-14 Listowel 1-11
Having met earlier in this competition when Waterville/Dromid ran out comfortable winners Listowel were determined to turn the tables on their southern opponents.
With less than five minutes gone in the game, played at Beaufort, Listowel were three points in front and it looked like we might be in for a shock result. Charlie O'Brien and David Sheehy were causing all sorts of problems for the Waterville/Dromid defence and but for the numerous timely interceptions of Joseph O'Shea Listowel might well have run into an unassailable lead.
Waterville/Dromid's first score came after a foul on Stephen O'Dwyer which he converted himself but immediately Mike O'Leary had one back for Listowel. Kerry minor Patrick Curran opened his account in the thirteenth minute and his team continued to weather the storm, which was intense in the extreme. Listowel ’s pressure bore fruit in the fifteenth minute when David Sheehy goaled to send his side into a five point lead. Indeed, a minute later Waterville / Dromid were fortunate to see another goal bound shot go just wide of the upright
By now Waterville/Dromid had introduced Niall O'Shea into the forward line and the impact was immediate. Report

Intermediate Championship
Waterville 3-06 Glenflesk 1-08

Waterville played hosts to Glenflesk in the first round of this year's Intermediate Championship. After a wonderful summer like day the rain started to come down just as referee Twiss threw in the ball to get matters under way. Conditions were good and the rain didn't last very long.
Glenflesk started the brighter and had a number of scoring chances early on while Waterville were finding it difficult to penetrate at the other end
It took until the seventh minute to open the scoring and this came via a Glenflesk free from the boot of full forward S. O'Donoghue. Waterville had a free scoring opportunity shortly afterwards but failed to convert. Waterville did open their account in he fourteenth minute when John D O'Shea collected a ball near the left corner flag, spotted Alan O'Shea in a good position in front of goal and O'Shea slotted the ball between the posts with ease. It was the same O'Shea who pushed Waterville in front in the twenty first minute after wing back Kevin O'Dwyer had won a difficult ball out near the sideline. Each side had scoring chances but both defences were solid and we had to wait till the twenty fourth minute for the next score which went to Glenflesk after some excellent forward interplay. Report |
Kerry County Cup U16
Killorglin AFC 1....... Park United 0 (Sat. 13th May 2006)
Two of our young players, Donncha Fenton and Daniel O'Dwyer, have been playing soccer during the Gaelic off-season with Killorglin AFC. This entailed travelling up to Killorglin with some of their pals from Cahersiveen for training sessions and matches.
Their efforts were well rewarded on Saturday last when they took on Park Utd. from Tralee in the County Cup at Mounthawk. The Tralee boys were fancied by most experts to take the laurels, having reached the last eight in the National Cup earlier in the season.
The Killorglin outfit ignored the pundits and the form book and stuck to their task from kick off and at half time neither side had conceded advantage. With five minutes left in the game Seán Cournane from Cahersiveen found the net for Killorglin and the trophy was heading southwards. The remaining minutes were frenetic but the boys in yellow and blue were not about to surrender their advantage and held on for a famous victory. This was the first occasion that they wn this competition.
We say well done to all involved and in particular the Kelliher brothers who prepared their team so well. Click the picture to see the boys above along with the fellows from Cahersiveen and their trainers. |

Coláiste Na Sceilge ladies senior ladies team annexed their sixth Munster title in a row when they defeated St. Mary's Macroom in this year's final. Coláiste won on the scoreline of 3-10 to 3-05 which was played at Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney.
Our club was well represented by Sinéad Curran who had a stormer at mid field, Maura Curran who lined out at corner forward and scored 1-01 and Laura Dennehy who was a squad member. We extend our congratulations to Coláiste Na Sceilge and in particular our own girls.
