South Kerry U16 Championship Final (Sunday 5th Dec. 2004)
Cormac O' Sullivan Lifts Trophy
Cormac Waterville U16 footballers captured their fourth U16 title in a row against an average Cahersiveen outfit at Renard on Sunday 5th December.
The throw in was at 12.30 to accommodate patrons who wanted to attend the senior semi-final between Dromid Pearses and Skellig Rangers played at Con Keating Park later in the day. Why this U16 final wasn’t played in the same venue as a curtain raiser to the senior game defies logic, especially when Waterville were agreeable to the venue. Full Report

Denis Donnelly

Denis Donnelly gave a masterful display at midfield, ably assisted by Alan O'Dwyer.

Every ball was contested and determination was the order of the day.

South Kerry Championship   Waterville  V  Dromid Pearses  (14/11/04)

Waterville 0-07  Dromid Pearses  1-10

The inevitable happened at Páirc an Phiarsaigh in the local derby, when Waterville Seniors finally went under to a formidable Pearses side in the first round of the South Kerry Championship.  Pearses were the more focused  and Waterville can have no quibble that the better side won on the day.
From the throw in, the ball came to Niall Moran who had a good opportunity to open the scoring after just twenty seconds but his shot went just marginally wide.  Waterville were the busier of the two teams in these opening minutes and their first score came from the boot of Denis O'Dwyer after three minutes of play.   Report

Full back, Seamus O'Shea made a sally up the field to encourage his fellow team-mates.

Declan O'Sullivan decided to have a word in Gary Galvin's ear during the game.

County Senior Final   (Nov 7th 2004)  South Kerry  V  Laune Rangers
South Kerry 1-13  Laune Rangers  2-05

All players were outstanding but Renard man John Sugrue was regarded by most as the Man of the Match.  His high fielding and all round contribution was a major factor in South Kerry's  success.

County Minor Final  (Nov 7th 2004)  South Kerry V  East Kerry
South Kerry 0-14 East Kerry 1-13

Minor Team Waterville’s Paddy Curran opened the scoring in the Minor County final, played at Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney, on Sunday, 7th November 2004, with a left footed point after a cross-field pass by Rory Keating. Five minutes into the game South Kerry missed a simple free 30m out after a high tackle on John Curran. With fifteen minutes left in the half South Kerry were five points ahead and it looked like East Kerry were in for a drubbing.  (Report)
Primary Skills Competition   (Oct 2004)

In the Primary Skills Competition held recently in the Con Keating Park, Caherciveen, local schoolboy Stephen Donnelly, Lake Road, who is a pupil of the local primary school shared joint first place in the individual section along with Darragh O'Sullivan of Caherciveen.  This was a terrific achievement and involved all the necessary skills needed to become an outstanding player.  Stephen now goes forward to compete at  County level on Nov. 12th in Austin Stack Park.
The team competition was shared between the boys from Cillín Liath and the Boys' School, Caherciveen.
We wish all concerned, the best of luck in the finals, especially Stephen.

Under 16 County Championship Final  (Sun Oct. 10th 2004)

Ina nail biting final quarter, the boys from South Kerry fought their way back into this County Final, to earn a replay with a goal from the boot of Paddy Curran (in picture).
This player had a personal tally of 1-08 in the game

South Kerry 1-11  West Kerry 2-08

South Kerry under 16s live to fight another day and take on the boys from West Kerry in the County Final Replay.
In a game played in beautiful sunny conditions in Killarney on Sunday Oct. 17th both teams finished all square.  Some of the South Kerry players failed to live up to the standards we have come to expect from them but in the end they did just about enough to earn another shot at the title.
It was a pity this most attractive game was fixed for a twelve noon start, as many would be supporters were unable to travel because of County League fixtures in the afternoon.

All Ireland Finals 2004
Waterville Club congratulates the Kerry Senior Team on their gallant All Ireland victory, in particular Jack O' Connor (trainer) & Declan O'Sullivan from our neighbouring club, Dromid Pearses.

Hard luck on Paddy Curran (Left) who was a member of the minor panel for Sunday's final.
He is still an under 16 player and and we hope his run out in the hallowed sod of Páirc an Chróchaigh will stand him in good stead for the future.

Great Honour For Young Player

Waterville & St Finian's National School was represented in Croke Park on All Ireland Final day by Stephen O'Dwyer (12) who'll took part in an exhibition game before the senior final.
This was a major honour for Stephen and he played well.  We hope it will be just his first of many appearances in this wonderful stadium.
These games are organised under the auspices of Cumann na mBunscol and the GAA.

ohn Galvin was a minor selector and everyone in the club commiserates with him along with his fellow selectors.  These are the fellows that have to make the crucial calls at critical moments while the rest of us can judge their decisions afterwards with the benefit of hindsight.

Kerry Defeat Derry in Semi-Final

Kerry 1-17    Derry 1-11

Local hero, Declan O' Sullivan (Dromid Pearses) played a major role in helping Kerry overcome the might of Derry to reach yet another All Ireland Senior Football Final.
Having suffered injury earlier in the campaign he showed top form and capped it off with a terrific goal in the second half to seal victory for the Kingdom.
At half time Kerry had but a one point margin to spare but in the second period they showed great class and determination  and outplayed Derry, running out easy victors in the end.  Man of the Match "Tomás Ó Sé"
Well done also to trainer Jack O' Connor, who seems to have that special something when it comes to getting the best out of players.
Good luck to all concerned in the final.

Seán Cathal O' Sullivan, son of John "Super" & Eileen O' Sullivan, Inchees, played in the exhibition Primary Mini-7s game at Croke Park during the interval in the senior Semi-Final.
Seán was chosen as one of the outstanding players in Munster in trials held earlier this summer.

John Galvin is a County Minor selector and brought a wealth of experience to the  preparation of the team.
Good luck to John & Paddy in the final.

County League Div 2   Round 9  Waterville  V  Gneeveguilla (Sat August 7th 04)

Waterville 0-08    Gneeveguilla 1-09

Hurricane Alex wagged its tail in Waterville on Saturday evening for the visit of Gneeveguilla and made playing conditions extremely difficult.  The visitors adapted better and were deserving of the spoils in the end.
Alan O' Shea opened the scoring with a point within just 30 seconds  after collecting a pass from Denis O' Dwyer but Gneeveguilla goaled within a minute after some naive play in the Waterville defence.  This score was to prove crucial and provided Gneeveguilla with a cushion right to the end.
It was Denis O' Dwyer again who turned provider for  Alan O' Shea to score Waterville's second point two minutes into the game.  Gneeveguilla had two more points by the 5th minute and were exposing with ease some inadequacies in the home defence.  To make matters worse a silly free was given away when a Waterville back needlessly tugged his opponents jersey in full glare of the referee.  The score now stood at 1-03 to 0-02.  (Full Report)

Waterville / Dromid  Under 12s Reign Supreme in County League  (July 2004)

Once again the Dromid/Waterville under 12 combination have come out top of their group and remain unbeaten for the second year in a row having played in excess of twenty games around the county. These lads and lassies are once again deserving winners of their county medals and we can look forward to watching their progress through the ranks in the years to come.
The final game of the Group was away to Glenflesk on Monday 12th July 2004. The large group of Dromid/Waterville supporters who travelled were rewarded with a fine display from both teams. Glenflesk had the lead from the start and were sure winners until the last kick of the game when D/W scored a goal to equalise 1-08 to 1-08 much to the delight of the team, trainers and supporters. It was an exciting and fitting end to the season which produced great team performances throughout.

Waterville Players: Micheál Curran, Oran Clifford, Sinéad Sullivan, Muireann McAuliffe, Shane Fisher, Eoin Sullivan, Joshua Thompson, John Vincent O'Dwyer, Micheäl Cronin, Barry Dwyer, Stephen Donnelly, Jason O' Sullivan.

Primary Game      June 2004
Muireann McAuliffe played for the County Primary Girls' team & represented her school and parish  versus Clare at Ennis. She had an excellent game at wing back. Our parish has been honoured with the inclusion of three young up and coming players on the County Primary Schools' Teams.  They achieved this through a series of trials thereby proving their individual worth and skill levels.
Muireann McAuliffe (Cillín Liath ), Iochtar Cua, who  played on the girls team in Ennis as a curtain raiser to the Kerry v Clare Senior Championship game while Dominic O' Sullivan (Cillín Liath ), Dromid, whose brother Declan is a vital cog in the senior team, played in the Primary Game V Cork at Killarney.  Stephen O' Dwyer (St. Finian's), Spunkane, nephew of former star Denis also played in the Killarney game.
All players performed well with the girls being victorious over Clare but the boys weren't so fortunate, going down to a much more physically strong Cork outfit.
Well done to Darragh O' Neill, Achatubrid, Ian Galvin, Caherdaniel & Max Thiemann, Coars who also played on the boys team at Killarney.
Dominic O' Sullivan had a fine game on the boys team at centre back against Cork at Killarney.
Dominic is the brother of county senior player Declan O' Sullivan
Stephen O' Dwyer, son of Dan & nephew of former County star Denis O' Dwyer, played at mid field for the County Primary Boys team.

Visitors From Cork     Saturday 12th June 2004
Just like old times in training, Robbie & Denis O' Dwyer contest a ball during the challenge match in Waterville.

Nemo Rangers in Waterville

On Saturday 12th of June a squad from the famous Nemo Rangers Club in Cork made the long trip to Waterville to take on the locals in a challenge game at the local sports field.
The game was competitive and highly entertaining with both sides determined to secure victory.  In the end however Waterville had the edge and ran out victors by a small margin.
Two former Waterville stalwarts lined out for Nemo in the persons of Robbie O' Dwyer at midfield and Seamus Murphy at wing forward.  They contributed well to their sides performance and both looked extremely fit and as eager as ever for the game.
The club would like to thank Nemo for making the effort and we hope they enjoyed their short stay with us.

Chairman Paddy Fogarty along with team trainer Dan Fitz, made a presentation to the Nemo Rangers Club in the Villa Maria
Great to see two former greats, Robbie O' Dwyer & Seamus Murphy back on the home turf.
Seamus was the match winner in the Intermediate Final of '93 when he came on as a sub for a current Waterville mentor.
Young Hurlers Taste Success
Young HurlersAfter a long absence the camán and sliotar has made a welcome return to the village of Waterville.
We are told the game was once popular locally but that unfortunately is many years ago.
Local chef and Kilkenny native, Robbie O' Mahony saw the potential in some of our up and coming athletes and acquired the necessary equipment to get the game off the ground once more.  After some intensive training the team were entered in the Under 13 (Division1) Competition in Kerry South.  All games were played indoors through the winter and occasionally consisted of blitzes where they played a number of games on the same day.
Our boys emerged victorious in the end and were crowned champions.  Well done Robbie and assistant trainer, Marion O' Dwyer.
County Minor League Final (Div 2) Watervile/Dromid  V  Dingle  (Monday 17th May 2004)
Waterville/ Dromid 2-11              Dingle 1-17
Played in ideal conditions at Killorglin, Waterville/Dromid and Dingle contested the Div 2 County Minor League Final on Monday 17th May 2004.
The game started in whirlwind fashion and we knew before long we were in for a fascinating encounter. After ten minutes of play Dingle were ahead on the score line of 0-05 to 0-02.
Dingle capitalised on every opportunity and their play was clinical and effective with nothing wasted while Waterville/Dromid were finding the initial going far more difficult.
Waterville/Dromid were unfortunate to lose John Curran as he carried an injury into the game and found it impossible to continue. He was an immeasurable loss as he had been a major playmaker in the competition to date.
Report

Up and coming young player William Hunt captained the minor team and did his best to help achieve victory.

Aidan "Shine" O' Sullivan gave a masterful display to try to stem the Dingle onslaught.

Denis Donnelly covered acres of space and showed some wonderful skill scoring three points of his sides total.

County League Round 4     Legion V  Waterville (Sat. May 15th 2004)
Team Captain John B. O' Shea had to retire after just fourteen minutes of play and was replaced by Dan Fitz who had an immediate impact on the game.

 Legion 2-09  Waterville 1-11

Waterville dropped their first County League points to Legion on Saturday May 15th at Killarney, by the narrowest of margins.
Waterville led by four points on two occasions but a lapse of concentration between the 18th and 21st minute of the second half  allowed Legion to notch up 1-02 and take the lead.  Waterville drew level through Denis O' Dwyer three minutes later but Legion were not to be denied and scored two more points in the dying minutes of the game to Waterville's one.
Many refereeing decisions caused players and spectators on both sides to gasp in astonishment but in the end Waterville can only blame themselves for not securing the victory.
Some players must also realise that if another player is in a better position the ball should be passed instead of trying to score from impossible angles.
Report

Niall Moran lined out at centre forward and had a busy evening.  He was particularly unlucky in the first half when his shot for a point just went left and wide.
Young Paddy Curran had a fine game on the wing and settled well into the team.(Scored two points)
He had already played a challenge game with the Kerry Minors earlier in the day.
South Kerry League Semi-Final       Waterville  V  Renard  (At Caherciveen Mon 3rd May 2004)
Gary Galvin in distress after shipping an over zealous tackle in the second half.

Waterville 1-06       Renard 0-05

Waterville overcame a determined Renard outfit at Caherciveen on May Bank Holiday Monday, 3rd May 2004, to book their place in the final of the South Kerry League.
In the first half the team were but a pale shadow the team we've seen perform so far this year and were lucky to be just a point in arrears at the break.
In the second half there was a marked improvement and within 5 minutes of the re-start they added a goal and two points and ran out eventual winners by a margin of four points.
Basic errors were common place and will not do if they are to lift the League trophy from their opponents Skellig Rangers in the final.

Wing back Eoin Moriarty in resolute mood as he breaks free and sets up another Waterville attack.

County Primary Schools Mini-7s  Champions  (Friday 31st April)
The boys from St. Finian's National School became county champions at Austin Stack Park, Tralee on Friday 31st May, when defeating Glenbeigh National School in the final.  They played five matches on the day and won each with ease.
Earlier in the week they had won the South Kerry section where competition was stiffer and they defeated fellow parishioners Cillín Liath National School, in the final. This game turned out to be a classic encounter where skill levels all round were of the highest calibre.  Observers suggest that this clash was the outstanding game of the whole competition.
Well done to all involved.
Intermediate Championship     Dingle   V  Waterville   Played at Gallarus   (Sat. 24th April 2004)
Denis O' Dwyer about to take a free in the second half.
Denis scored two points from frees and one from play & was Waterville's best player on this occasion.

Dingle 1-14   Waterville 0-12

Waterville suffered their first defeat of the new season when going down to a superior Dingle outfit in the Intermediate Championship, played at Gallarus on Saturday 24th April.
This was sweet revenge for the men from the west as they had lost to Waterville in the penultimate stage of the same competition last year.
Conditions were blustery but sunny and Dingle had the advantage of the wind in the first half.  Waterville held out manfully for the first twenty minutes and were only a point behind (0-3 to 0-4).  In the remaining eleven minutes Dingle racked up six points which in the end proved to be the undoing of Waterville.  It has to be said that the Dingle points were  of outstanding quality and proved they were well used to the Gallarus conditions.
Waterville did come within four points in the second half but a converted Dingle penalty effectively ended Waterville's continuation in this years championship.

County League Round 3     Waterville V  St Michael's/Foilmore (17th April 2004)

Waterville 1-10   St.Mls/Foilmore 1-07

After a day of inclement weather the gods smiled on Waterville in the evening and cleared the skies to allow for a highly entertaining and competitive game in Round 3 of Division 2 of the County League, played at Waterville.
Waterville played into the stiff breeze in the first half and were first to score but the joy was short lived when a terrific Bally/Filemore strike from distance ended in the Waterville net, with Waterville goalkeeper Bernard Murphy well beaten.  A re-jigging of the full back line was called for which saw Gary Galvin being moved to secure the edge of the square and for the remainder of the game that player put in a "Man of the Match" performance.
This match seemed won with 15 minutes still remaining but then Waterville became casual and allowed the opposition back in and they scored four points in six minutes.  There's a lesson to be learned there.

Waterville were best served by the outstanding Gary Galvin, also Mike Curran, Alan O' Shea, Buddy O' Shea & Gearóid O' Sullivan, along with both midfielders.
Report

Gary Galvin gave a "Man of the Match" display for Waterville when switched to the full back position & settled the whole defence.
Fenton Daly, along with the other substitutes watched anxiously in the final moments and hoped Bally/Foilmore wouldn't snatch a late goal to draw level.

This spectator was quite happy at half time, knowing that his team was playing well.  But what was he showing to the lady beside him ??

County League Round 2      Ballymacelligott  V   Waterville  (Sunday March 28th)

Ballymacelligott 1-09      Waterville  0-13

Full back Seamus O' Shea had another fine hour on the fringe of the square and with every game is showing a return to his old form

Waterville doubled their points tally in the County League after making the long trip to Ballymacelligott on Saturday 10th April (Easter Saturday).  It was a game that could have gone either way but in the end it was the men in red who got the rub of the green.
Waterville were best served by Eoin Moriarty & Seamus O' Shea in the backs and midfield were solid all through, especially Denis O' Dwyer in the final quarter when it really mattered.
The attack missed the cutting edge of Keith Moran who is still stateside but a score line of thirteen points is still a respectable return against a side of the calibre of Ballymacelligott.

County League Round 1      Beaufort  V   Waterville  (Sunday March 28th)

Keith Moran played a leading role in the victory over Beaufort, scoring 1-04.
He is heading for Westington in West Virginia for six weeks in connection with his employment.

Beaufort 0-11       Waterville 1-12

Waterville bagged their first brace of points in their first outing in this season's County League.  They were hard won and called for some stern defending and accurate shooting.
Both the setting of Beaufort and weather conditions were conducive to good football.  Those who travelled were not disappointed with a display that showed the heart and spirit of all the men who make up the senior squad.  All the backs played well but the tigerish attitude of wing back Eoin Moriarty encouraged all around him, particularly in the first half.
