Dinner Dance     Dec 29th 2003 in Bay View Hotel
The Waterville G.A.A. Dinner Dance took place  on Monday 29th of December in the Bay View Hotel.  T. R. Dallas provided musical entertainment of a standard not experienced in Waterville for some time.
Medals were presented to the under 16s & the minors by South Kerry Board Chairman, Pat Everett and the legendary Micko Dwyer.  Presentations were also made to Margaret Galvin for outstanding service to the club,  Darby Clifford for his long service as a player and Keith Moran received the coveted Player of the Year award.

Darby Clifford receives his trophy for his "enormously" long service as a player, from "The Legend" himself.

Keith Moran was the popular choice as the outstanding "Player of The Year" for 2003.
The evening was graced with the presence of the President of the club & his wife The First Lady.  (Maura & Donal Dwyer)
Centenary Cup Final       Waterville   V  Milltown/Castlemaine      (Sunday 7th Dec 2003)

Waterville 0-05   Milltown/Castlemaine 1-07

The senior team failed at the final hurdle in their Centenary Cup campaign.  They met a far more physical Milltown/Castlemaine outfit and can have no complaints on the day.

Keith Moran scored four of the five Waterville points.

These supporters had to button up tightly in the cold, sharp easterly breeze.

Waterville/Dromid Under 12s Clinch Success in County League

Earlier on this year Waterville and near neighbours Dromid Pearses combined combined forces to compete in the under 12 County League.
In all they played nine matches and won every one of them comprehensively. All who attended these matches remarked on the high level of skill of these young players.  We look forward to the future of football in South Kerry with great hope and who knows, we may yet be cheering some of them wearing the green & gold of Kerry up in the hallowed ground of Croke Park.

Centenary Cup Semi-Final       Waterville   V  Dingle      (Sunday 23rd Nov 2003)

Waterville 0-11   Dingle 0-08

It's said that a week is a long time in politics but the same could be said of Gaelic football.  After suffering defeat last Sunday in the championship it would take something special to carve out victory against a fancied Dingle team.  Our boys brushed aside self pity and got on with the job of reaching the final of the second most important competition in the county and did so in style.
Full Report

The defence holds solid to prevent Dingle getting a goal.  All the backs were outstanding to deny the favourites victory.

Eoin Moriarty had another fine game at corner back.  The best of goods do come in small packages !

Young Ciara O' Shea (daughter Of Buddy & Nicola) found the whole thing tiring and decided to have a nap.  It was her first game as a spectator

Waterville were well supported by the fairer sex.  Hazel Fogarty is delighted at the opportunity of another day out at the final.

South Kerry Championship V  St Michaels/ Foilmore  (Sunday 16th Nov 2003)
Plenty of red shirts available to ensure possession for Waterville in the first half.  Seamus & Buddy rise high for this ball.

Waterville 1-07   Bally/Foilmore 0-12
The senior team will have to wait another year to try to capture the Jack Murphy trophy.  On Sunday 16th November they lost their tussle with Bally/Foilmore who now go on to the final.
Waterville started well and within a minute Buddy O' Shea had the first score of the game.  The team as a whole were going well and by half time no fewer than six different players had scored.  By half time they were ahead by two points (1-06 to 0-07).  The difference should have been much greater, had great scoring opportunities been availed of.  (All but one of the Bally scores in the first half, came from frees.)   Alas, these misses were to prove costly as Waterville could manage just one point from play in the second half to Bally/Foilmore's five.  Main score getter John D was injured and possibly shouldn't have started.  He only lasted eight or nine minutes into the second half and had to be substituted.

A minute's silence was observed to mark the untimely death at a young age of local vet and former GAA great, Mike O' Leary.
We extend our sympathy to Mike's family and to his club St. Mary's

John D O' Shea attempts to get in a shot but his kick is blocked down.  (He carried a painful groin strain into the game.)
Paddy Walsh & Haulie worry that the wasted opportunities may be costly.  They were right!
Under 16 South Kerry Championship  Waterville V Renard   (Saturday November 1st)
The under 16 team, along with their mentors, who brought the third successive title to the club under difficult conditions at Cahersiveen on Saturday Nov 1st 2003. Waterville under 16s fought a difficult battle with old rivals Renard at Cahersiveen on Saturday to secure the trophy for the third year in a row.  Conditions were far from ideal for good football but these young footballers from both teams served up an intriguing encounter to delight the faithful who battled the elements to come out and support their teams.
County League   Waterville Versus Glenflesk Round 11  (Saturday 25th Oct 03)
Brendan O' Shea sees off the challenge of his opponent and clears the ball upfield

Waterville 0-12  Glenflesk 1-07

Waterville seniors preserved their division 2 status by defeating Glenflesk in the final game of this season's County League, which finished in failing light conditions on Saturday 25th Oct at Waterville.
Failure to secure at least one point would have resulted in a play-off situation and possible relegation.
This was a tough encounter as Glenflesk needed to win to avoid dropping to division 3.  Waterville lead at the interval by a point but within three minutes of the restart the visitors were ahead by three points courtesy off a quick goal and two points to Waterville's solitary point.  The supporters were beginning to worry but the players showed they're made of sterner stuff and went on to regain the lead and finally end the game with a cushion of two points to spare.
While improvements are needed it was heartening to see such a committed team display, especially the scoring exploits of John D. O' Shea who showed he can defend as well as attack.

Dan Fitz is determined to get in front of his man and seize the initiative for Waterville again.
Gary Galvin may be outnumbered but still managed to get possession and set up another attack.
Minor Championship:  Waterville Versus St. Michaels/Filemore (Saturday 18th Oct 2003)

These young footballers made every effort to achieve success.

South Kerry Minor Championship
Minors lose out against St. Michaels/Filemore (After Extra Time)

Waterville 2-09 St. Michaels/Filemore 2-15

Waterville minors finally succumbed to a doggedly  determined St. Michaels/Filemore team at Cahersiveen on Saturday 18th Oct 03.
After nine minutes of play Bally/Filemore were ahead by four points and Waterville had yet to register a score.  However, a minute later Paddy Curran wreaked havoc in the Bally/Filemore defence, rode a few haughty challenges & rifled the ball to the net.  This proved to be our only score of the first half while Bally/Filemore tagged on another three points.
The second half  was more fruitful and at full time the sides were locked at 2-06 to 0-12.
Extra time was kinder to our opponents and they had a margin of six points to spare at the end.
Full Report

Gerry Carroll had another fine game.  He scored a goal and was unfortunate to see another effort come off the bottom of the post with just seconds left in normal time.
Shane Coffey gave everything, especially when moved to a more central role. (Seen here with opponent Seán O' Shea)

Minors Win Against Renard After Extra Time

Waterville 0-18 Renard 2-10

Waterville minors had a hard-won victory against Renard at Cahersiveen on Saturday 11th Oct 03.
Renard were first to open the scoring through a Liam O' Sullivan free but at the end of the half Waterville were ahead on the score line of 0-07 to 0-04.
Midway through the second half the margin was increased to eight points and it seemed as if the game was in the bag but Renard had other ideas.  With just six minutes left in the game Renard went a point in front through a goal but at full time the sides were level.
After a nail-biting extra twenty minutes Waterville ran out victors by a margin of two points.

Defensive errors caused some anxious moments for these supporters.
The minors were well supported by members of the senior team panel.
County League:  Waterville Defeat Firies  Round 10    (Sat. 27th of Sept. 03)

County League
Waterville 4-13  Firies 1-04

Waterville seniors had a facile win over a poor Firies side at Farranfore on Saturday 27th of September.  Even though it took eight minutes for Waterville to register their first score, by the 12th minute they had two goals and a point on the scoreboard.  The goals came via John B O' Shea and David Daly.  J.B was to raise the green flag again before half time and by this stage the only question to be answered was the margin of victory.
This game was no real test of the team but nevertheless some fine scores were executed.

John D O' Shea kicked a forty five in the 21st minute which split the posts.

Midfielder Seamus O' Sullivan rises high to collect the ball which he delivered to Denis Carroll who opened the scoring with a point
Under 12 Girls Lose Out To Ballinskelligs in Under 12(A) Final  (Sept 26 2003)
Waterville 4-09 Ballinskelligs 6-12
After a terrific tussle the girls under 12 team were defeated by Ballinskelligs at Renard.  Every player did her best and with a little luck success might have been theirs.  The margin was down to a single point with less than five minutes left but a break in play due to injury allowed Ballinskelligs to regroup and they kicked some fine scores to win the title.

The defence watch this Bally effort sail wide of the posts.

Gerry Carroll is another up and coming player who rifled in a goal in the second half , when it was most needed.

Minor League A Final
Waterville 1-12  Skellig Rangers 1-04

Waterville minors had a well earned win over rivals, Skellig Rangers in the final of the South Kerry League on Saturday Sept 20th.
Waterville led on a scoreline of eight points to three at the break but in the second half the margin was reduced to the minimum.  Some stalwart defending by the backs who weathered the storm well and the goal by Gerry Carroll turned the tide again in favour of the Lakesiders, who ran out easy winners in the end.

Under 12A Final
Waterville 1-10  Templenoe 2-04

Mícheál Lyne presents the "Gearóid Lyne Memorial Trophy" to Waterville captain Seán Cathal O' Sullivan. Waterville under-12 team took on Templenoe, newcomers to South Kerry, at Renard on Wednesday August 13 and lifted the "Gearóid Lyne Perpetual Trophy".
This was a thrilling game of football, played in glorious sunshine & attracted a large crowd.  Skill levels were high on both sides, which is a credit to the trainers involved.  The game ebbed and flowed but in the end the boys in red (+ Paula O' Sullivan) had that little extra and claimed victory.
The game was well refereed by local man Michael Curran, Dromid Pearses & the pitch was in top order by the Renard club.  (Report & Pictures)
