The final of the South Kerry under 12 boys competition took place in
glorious sunshine at Renard on August 13th 2003. Our boys were
rewarded for their dedicated training and commitment by lifting the
"Gearóid Lyne Trophy".

Stephen Dwyer opened the scoring in the second minute with a sweetly
struck free from his left boot. This was the start our boys needed
and a minute later Micheál Cronin showed that he too knew how to score
by snatching an opportunist point. Stephen Dwyer followed up shortly
afterwards with another. This had the Waterville supporters on their
toes in anticipation of a possible victory. Waterville were
already in total control and Templenoe seemed as if this was a game too
far. We were soon shocked to reality as the boys from the south
got the ball down the field and rattled our net. It wasn't long
before Stephen Dwyer had split the post again & then cousin Barry,
in the 12th minute, had Waterville's first goal. We were now
coasting again and before half time Stephen added two more points to
leave the score, Waterville 1-06...Templenoe 1-00.
With all team members playing well it seemed as if the only question was
what would the winning margin be. Templenoe however had other ideas and
must have got an effective pep talk at the break because after the
restart they played with great gusto and had our boys rattled.
Within five minutes they had scored 1-03 and had drawn level. By
the 9th minute they had notched another point and took the lead for the
first time. We were under pressure in most sectors and defeat
seemed inevitable. But our young footballers don't know when to
throw in the towel and through shrewd encouraging from their mentors
they found a new gear. In the final eight minutes of the game
Stephen Dwyer had three more points, Niall Fitzgerald had one and
Stephen then put the game out of reach for Templenoe with a bullet to
the net. This left a winning margin of six points and was a true
reflection of how the game had been played. Every team member
can take credit for a wonderful display. Well done to team mentors
John Dwyer & Dan Fitzpatrick for devoting their time to coaching and
showing such enthusiasm.
Scorers: Stephen Dwyer 1-08, Barry Dwyer 1-00, Micheál Cronin 0-01,
Niall Fitzgerald 0-01.
