All Ireland Carer Of The Year
"Margaret Curran"
News Release 23 rd April 2007 ‘Ireland’s Family Carers can be summed up in one word “inspirational’” Ireland’s Family Carers of the Year Honoured with Special Awards Ireland’s Family Carers have been honoured at The Carers Association’s Carer of the Year Awards held today at a special ceremony in Dublin. Newstalk’s Claire Byrne and Minister for Communication, Noel Dempsey presented Awards to Ireland’s Carer of the Year and Ireland’s Young Carer of the Year. The Carers Association received a record number of nominations for this year’s Carer of the Year Awards. In total, 600 family carers were nominated and regional awards recipients were; James Kelly (70), Dublin, who cares for his wife Patricia since she suffered a stroke, Mairead McCabe (43), Cavan, caring for her sister and parents in law, Theresa Cuddy (40), Laois, who cares for her two children who have Muscular Dystrophy and Margaret Curran (65), Kerry, who has been caring for her husband for over 29 years following a serious accident. “We received a record number of nominations for our Carer of the Year Awards 2007”, says Enda Egan, CEO of The Carers Association. “These Awards are important for recognising the enormous contribution of family Carers who care for their loved ones full-time in the home, often with little acknowledgement. This year’s nominations highlight the commitment, courage and strength of our family Carers, often in the face of very difficult circumstances”. Margaret’s husband, John, suffered a neck injury helping with house renovations in 1978. This tragic accident left John paralysed from the neck down and totally dependent on Margaret for his everyday needs. Since the accident, Margaret has devoted her entire life to caring for John as well as raising the couple’s four children. Margaret’s many nominations describe her positive outlook on life and her gentle, loving, outgoing and caring nature. Margaret is always willing to help fellow community members and enriches the lives of everyone she meets. She continues to be an inspiration to all who know her and truly deserving of the accolade of Irelands Family Carer for 2007. The Carers Association is the National voluntary organisation of family carers in the home, providing support services, respite, training and information to carers throughout Ireland. The Carers Association can be contacted on the National Careline Freefone 1800 24 07 24 or see www.carersireland.com. |
James O'Shea |
On Friday last March 31st, a dark cloud of sadness formed over Waterville at the news that former player, selector and mentor, James O’Shea had lost his fight for life, after a brave and determined battle against illness. James was a sportsman through and through. His greatest sporting passion was for Gaelic football, fishing and hunting. He loved his club Waterville, where he played for many years having contested three county senior finals and accumulated seven South Kerry Championship medals during his playing career. When he finished playing he remained involved as a selector and mentor not just with the club but also with South Kerry where his cool head and considered opinion were always highly valued and respected. James is a huge loss not only to his family but to the whole community. We extend our sympathy to James' family. He will never be forgotten by those who had the good fortune of knowing him. Go ndéana Dia trócaire ar a anam is go raibh sé ar dheis lámh Dé. |
